Mario Kart World: Complete Playable Character Roster Unveiled for Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo continues to build anticipation for its next flagship racing title, Mario Kart World, slated for release exclusively on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
With multiple events and dedicated presentations leading up to launch, fans worldwide have eagerly awaited detailed updates on the highly anticipated installment in the Mario Kart franchise.
During an exclusive Mario Kart World-focused Nintendo Direct held on April 17, 2025, Nintendo shed new light on the game's robust features and content.
Among the most significant reveals was the confirmation of a full roster of 50 playable characters, a milestone for the beloved racing series.
Expanded Roster and Multiplayer Enhancements
Spanning updates from the initial Nintendo Switch 2-focused Direct, hands-on previews at Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, and official press materials, players can now get a comprehensive view of the racer lineup.
The new Mario Kart World Direct showcased these characters in greater detail, affirming both returning favorites and new contenders in the most expansive roster yet.
According to Nintendo representatives during the broadcast, players will be able to compete with up to 24 racers on the track at once, a franchise-first that raises the stakes for online and local multiplayer matches.
"Our goal with Mario Kart World is to bring together all corners of the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond," Nintendo noted in their official press kit circulated to media outlets following the event.
"With 50 unique characters, fans have more options than ever to find a racer that matches their style." This commitment to variety and player choice is reflected not only in the roster but also in the game's wide array of courses, karts, and customization features.
Nintendo’s Dedication to Innovation
The development team, led by Nintendo's veteran studio EPD, has a track record of innovation within the Mario Kart franchise, most recently with the success of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the original Nintendo Switch—a title that surpassed 60 million units sold, making it one of the platform's best-selling games.
With Mario Kart World, Nintendo aims to set a new standard by leveraging the enhanced hardware and capabilities of the Nintendo Switch 2.
The new hardware promises faster load times, improved graphical fidelity, and expanded online multiplayer capabilities.
Mario Kart World is scheduled to launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, with availability both physically and digitally through the Nintendo eShop.
Stay tuned for further updates as Nintendo reveals even more about Mario Kart World’s features and post-launch content in the weeks ahead.
