Artdink Announces Aquanaut's Holiday Reissue for Nintendo Switch and Steam in Japan

Artdink, a renowned name in the Japanese video game industry, has officially announced the reissue date for Aquanaut's Holiday, the beloved underwater exploration game, as part of its celebrated Artdink Game Log series.

Following the earlier revival of Tail of the Sun on Steam and Nintendo Switch (in Japan), the developer continues its commitment to bringing classic PlayStation titles to modern platforms.

This latest reissue will launch on April 23, 2026, available digitally for both Steam and the Japanese Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch.

Originally debuting on the PlayStation 1 in June 1995, Aquanaut's Holiday was directed by Kazutoshi Iida, well-known for his unique design sensibilities as the creator of Doshin the Giant.

The game is recognized for its tranquil, free-roaming gameplay, allowing players to explore a mysterious underwater world aboard a submarine.

Unlike traditional adventure games, Aquanaut's Holiday features no fixed objectives—instead, players are encouraged to discover the ocean’s secrets and cultivate reefs to attract a variety of marine life.

The reissue, uncovered by industry sources such as GSK, retains the essence of the original while incorporating modern enhancements.

Artdink has confirmed that the 2026 release will feature two distinct gameplay modes: a 'Remastered' mode and a 'Classic' mode.

The Remastered mode utilizes generative AI technology to upscale in-game cutscenes and assets, offering visual upgrades for contemporary audiences.

The Classic mode, meanwhile, allows long-time fans and newcomers alike to experience the game as it was, complete with optional scanline and CRT filter effects for an authentic retro presentation.

While this version of Aquanaut's Holiday will be released in Japan without English localization—mirroring the approach taken with the Tail of the Sun reissue—the game remains highly "import-friendly" due to its minimalist and exploration-centric gameplay.

The absence of extensive text or dialogue barriers should allow international enthusiasts to enjoy the experience much as Japanese players did upon its original launch.

On Aquanaut's Holiday's reissue page, it is described as "a simple 3D adventure game where you explore a mysterious underwater world." The confirmed pricing for the Japanese release is 2,420 yen (tax included), aligning with the earlier Tail of the Sun re-release.

While overseas pricing and localization details have not been revealed, previous releases in the Game Log series suggest a similar pricing model for international markets where applicable.

Artdink’s ongoing Game Log initiative exemplifies its dedication to the preservation and accessibility of niche classic titles.

As more PlayStation-era gems receive new life on platforms like Nintendo Switch and Steam, enthusiasts can continue to look forward to experiencing these influential works—some for the first time, others as a return to the games that defined a generation.
