Super Item Studios has officially confirmed that Dono’s Tale, their vibrant platformer inspired by the 16 and 32-bit era, will be launching on both the Nintendo Switch and the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2.
While an exact release date has not yet been announced, the announcement solidifies the studio’s commitment to bringing Dono’s Tale to both current and next-generation Nintendo hardware.
Dono’s Tale is a visually striking and nostalgic 2D platformer featuring a charming dragon protagonist named Dono.
The project began as a successful Kickstarter campaign, where it resonated with fans of classic platformers and quickly surpassed its initial funding goal—raising well over $10,000 within the first 72 hours.
Players will guide Dono, a determined blue dragon, on a quest to recover his stolen fruit, traversing a variety of beautifully designed worlds such as grasslands, deserts, underwater cities, mountain peaks, and even outer space.
The game’s mechanics emphasize fluid platforming, with Dono able to jump, dash, climb, and shoot, harnessing a suite of unique abilities acquired throughout the adventure.
These abilities—including Fireballs, Dragon Claw, ThunderStrike, Power Mittens, and Pegasus Wings—not only allow for creative navigation but also introduce strategic combat options, especially during boss battles.
For instance, Pegasus Wings lets Dono execute high leaps and fluttering jumps, ThunderStrike enables dashing and sliding under obstacles, while Power Mittens allows him to grip walls and enemies.
The game encourages swift and skillful play by letting players swap abilities on the fly, opening possibilities for chaining moves to overcome challenging levels.
Super Item Studios founder and lead developer Dagoberto “Dago” Duarte reflected on the creative vision for Dono’s Tale, stating, “Dono’s Tale serves as an homage to the 2D platformers that defined my childhood.
The game draws inspiration from iconic titles such as Yoshi’s Island, Mega Man X, Donkey Kong Country, and from the unique flair of lesser-known classics.
The energetic gameplay is influenced by speedrunning as well as action titles like Super Smash Bros Melee and Devil May Cry.
Our goal has been to blend the nostalgia of these classics with fresh innovations, resulting in a game that is at once familiar yet excitingly new.”
With its blend of classic gameplay elements and contemporary design, Dono’s Tale aims to appeal to fans of traditional platformers and those seeking a vibrant new adventure on both the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
Additional project information—including gameplay footage and ongoing updates—can be found on the game’s Kickstarter page.
As anticipation grows for its official launch, Dono’s Tale stands out as a promising indie addition to Nintendo’s expansive platformer catalog.
