In a newly released "Ask the Developer" interview, key members of the development team shed light on the origin of the title’s standout destruction mechanics—offering an unprecedented look into the creative forces shaping this new Donkey Kong adventure. The developers, including veteran Nintendo figures Wataru Tanaka and Kenta Motokura, shared their development journey, focusing on the technical experiments that became the foundation for Bananza’s gameplay. During the interview, Tanaka explained that soon after the launch of Super Mario Odyssey in 2017, the team began to explore the concept of a fully destructible environment—not yet tied to a specific game or character.

Tanaka recalled, "After Super Mario Odyssey was complete, we initiated technical experiments to answer the question: what kind of gameplay would emerge if nearly everything in the environment could be destroyed?" Motokura added an intriguing detail: "For one prototype, we attached arms to a Goomba character." Tanaka elaborated, referencing Odyssey’s memorable boss fight: "In Super Mario Odyssey, Knucklotec, the boss known for his enormous hands, inspired us.

Our programmer repurposed his arms by attaching them to a Goomba, allowing it to smash terrain, rip off chunks to use as weapons, and even hurl them into the environment.

These actions proved to be surprisingly satisfying and hinted at a deeper, destruction-driven core that could shape player engagement." Motokura concluded that these technical tests confirmed destruction-based gameplay as both entertaining and well-suited to Donkey Kong’s famously powerful persona.

As he put it, "The results demonstrated that destructive interactions could be a perfect match for Donkey Kong’s brute strength, and the core gameplay quickly crystallized from there." The interview also revealed that Donkey Kong Bananza was initially developed for the first Nintendo Switch system.

It was only after recognizing the enhanced capabilities of the upcoming Switch 2 hardware in 2021 that the team considered transitioning development, aiming to achieve even more dynamic destruction effects and richer environmental interactions. Donkey Kong Bananza is poised to become a showcase title for innovative destruction mechanics on the Nintendo platform, continuing a history of boundary-pushing design.
