Nintendo Switch players have a surprise addition on the eShop as Dokapon: Sword of Fury, the remastered version of the classic PlayStation party-RPG, launches unexpectedly in the West.
Originally known for its raucous blend of turn-based board game mechanics and RPG progression, Dokapon: Sword of Fury first made its debut in 1998.
The remaster was initially released in Japan in August 2023, but up until now, no official announcement regarding an English-language or western release had been made.
Developed by Sting Entertainment, the party-centric RPG has long been celebrated for its unique premise: a multiplayer board game where only the shrewdest—or most cutthroat—players claim victory.
According to the official Nintendo eShop description, players can look forward to frenetic, friendships-testing competition, as the ultimate 'relationship-ruining' RPG board game returns to the Nintendo Switch.
The gameplay invites participants to "spin the wheel" and embark on an adventure that spans a vast and varied world, confronting monsters, leveling up, and hoarding wealth with the help of new and returning weapons.
As in the original, the end goal is to amass the most riches, whether by following the rules, bending them, or outright betraying your friends.
This latest version of Dokapon: Sword of Fury leverages the Nintendo Switch’s technical features, offering extensive display options, including HD and widescreen support.
Adjustable speed settings up to 5x allow for a faster pace, catering to players' desire for more dynamic play sessions.
The remaster also brings substantial customization, letting users swap in classic battle music, tailor game balance, set the length of a session, or even enable handicaps for newcomers.
A significant upgrade for the modern era is the addition of Online Mode.
Players can now connect with friends or rivals from afar for remote multiplayer competition, with ample quality-of-life improvements like an autosave function for play on-the-go.
Dokapon: Sword of Fury is now available for purchase on the Nintendo eShop at a regular price of $24.99, with a special launch discount pricing it at $19.99 until May 7.
The unexpected release of this beloved title on Nintendo Switch underscores the continued demand for classic party games with a modern twist, and marks another milestone for Sting Entertainment's legacy in the genre.
