Launched in 2002 with Kingdom Hearts on PlayStation 2, the franchise combines Square Enix’s role-playing pedigree with Disney’s extensive character roster and has grown through multiple numbered entries, handheld titles, remasters and compilation releases.
The series’ mainstream breakthrough came with early PlayStation 2 releases — Kingdom Hearts (2002) and Kingdom Hearts II (2005) — and the franchise continued to expand across platforms over the following decades.
Kingdom Hearts III, developed by Square Enix under director Tetsuya Nomura, launched on January 29, 2019, for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One and represented the return to a mainline console release after numerous interquel titles and remasters.
Over time, Square Enix has issued HD collections, remasters and digital releases, making the series available on multiple platforms and storefronts, including PC and console digital stores and notable digital marketplaces such as the Nintendo eShop for certain re-releases and compilations.
In announcing the milestone, Disney’s executive vice president of global games, Sean Shoptaw, highlighted the franchise’s commercial scale and creative approach.
Paraphrasing his remarks: Shoptaw said Kingdom Hearts is now one of nine game properties that have generated more than $1 billion in retail sales, and he emphasized Disney’s focus on delivering original, medium-specific storytelling that leverages the strengths of interactive media.
The announcement arrives as the franchise continues to attract attention for future installments.
Fans recently received an update on Kingdom Hearts IV, and Square Enix has maintained public communications about ongoing development and franchise plans.
While Kingdom Hearts’ $1 billion retail milestone is a measurable commercial benchmark, the series is also notable for its complex narrative, cross-company collaboration between Square Enix and Disney, and its long-running presence across console generations.
For industry observers, the milestone cements Kingdom Hearts’ status as one of the more commercially successful multimedia game series developed by Square Enix and published in partnership with Disney, demonstrating sustained consumer demand for both new entries and curated re-releases across modern platforms.
