Village in the Shade: NIS America to Launch Spooky Farming Sim on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 This Fall

NIS America has officially announced the Western release of Village in the Shade, the latest title from renowned developer Nippon Ichi Software, bringing a fresh twist to the farming simulator genre.

Originally revealed as Honogurashi no Niwa during the Japanese Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase in July 2025, Village in the Shade is slated to launch this fall on both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

Known primarily for the acclaimed Disgaea and Phantom Brave series, Nippon Ichi Software is venturing into new territory with Village in the Shade, which presents a distinct blend of atmospheric, hand-painted visuals and cozy—but mysterious—gameplay.

The title has garnered attention for its unique positioning as a "spooky farming sim," setting itself apart from traditional offerings by infusing serene rural life with ominous undertones and local legends.

In Village in the Shade, players will settle into the idyllic, secret-laden village of Kagatsu, tending crops, gathering resources, and building their homestead.

The development team provides a captivating premise: while enjoying the tranquility of day-to-day farm life, players must abide by strict rules—don't talk to strangers, don't leave the village, and, above all, never venture out after dark.

The game promises a rich tapestry of features, including customizable home décor, crafting systems, and the celebration of traditional Japanese festivals like the summer festival and cherry blossom viewing.

Interactions with villagers foster a sense of community, but unearthing the truth behind the village's enigmatic customs becomes a focal point for those eager to explore beyond the peaceful façade.

Expanding on its tradition of fan-pleasing collector's items, NIS America has confirmed a Limited Edition of Village in the Shade will be available via the NIS Online Store for both Switch platforms.

The exclusive bundle, retailing at $89.99 (regional pricing may vary), includes the game, a collector’s box, an artbook, original soundtrack, sticker sheet, five enamel pins, and an acrylic stand.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version will be released as a Game-Key Card, in line with previous practice for new-generation releases.

Village in the Shade is entering a particularly dynamic year for farm sims, joining notable indie games like Neverway and Grave Seasons that also offer genre-defying, spooky-themed experiences.

As the fall 2025 launch approaches, fans of farming simulators and narrative-driven adventures alike have much to anticipate from this visually captivating and atmospherically rich title.

Stay tuned to official channels for further updates on Village in the Shade’s Western release, and don’t miss out on the Limited Edition while supplies last on the NIS Online Store.
