Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition on Switch 2 arrives during Sonic the Hedgehog's 35th anniversary window and brings a meaningful technical uplift, according to a recent Digital Foundry analysis.

Developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, Sonic Frontiers originally launched in 2022 and has now received a Switch 2–exclusive Definitive Edition build that targets better performance and visual fidelity on Nintendo's next-generation handheld/console hardware.

Digital Foundry’s deep-dive characterizes the Switch 2 release as an improvement rather than a flawless conversion.

In their assessment, the update represents a clear step up from the original Switch port: while it is not a perfect port, the technical enhancements are significant.

Put plainly, the technical improvements are substantial and noticeably elevate open-world presentation and stability in a number of areas.

The Definitive Edition offers two primary visual modes.

The default performance mode targets 60 frames per second and runs at a base 720p on the docked Switch 2, while the graphics (quality) mode prioritizes visual fidelity and targets a mostly stable 30fps at native 1080p.

Digital Foundry notes handheld performance is more variable: performance mode dynamically scales between roughly 480p and 720p in demanding open-world sections, while quality mode fluctuates between 720p and 1080p.

Cutscenes are generally locked to 30fps.

Notable retained and improved effects include screen-space reflections on water — a standout flourish carried over from the original Switch release — alongside higher-quality shadows, improved texture filtering, and enhanced level-of-detail across the open world.

These changes combine to reduce blurring and improve object clarity at range.

However, Digital Foundry flags persistent issues.

Pop-in remains a distracting problem in some areas, and a handful of premium graphical effects are absent from the Switch 2 build; motion blur, advanced water ripple physics, and the highest-end global illumination settings are not present in this release.

On the consumer side, there is no free upgrade path for owners of the original Nintendo Switch version, but existing Switch save data will transfer to the Switch 2 Definitive Edition.

Sega has also confirmed the physical Switch 2 release will ship as a Game-Key Card.

Overall, Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition on Switch 2 represents a measurable technical step forward for Sonic Team’s open-world entry, delivering improved performance and image quality while leaving room for further polish.
