HumaNature Studios, the independent developer renowned for crafting memorable gaming experiences, has officially announced its next title, 'Dancing with Ghosts'.
Helmed by veteran game designer Greg Johnson, best known as the creator of the ToeJam & Earl series, this poignant life-simulation game is scheduled for release on Nintendo Switch in 2026.
To support its development, a Kickstarter campaign will be launched in October, offering fans an opportunity to participate in bringing this unique story to life.
'Dancing with Ghosts' explores themes of loss, healing, and cultural connection, delivering an emotionally resonant narrative.
Players follow the journey of Mai, a 15-year-old girl navigating life in a tranquil river village in Thailand after the tragic loss of her parents.
Mai encounters Pim, a spirited ghost who has few memories of her life, and together, they embark on a quest to process their intertwined struggles with identity and grief.
The game draws inspiration from the Thai concept of 'tham boon,' an act of making merit, as players help villagers through engaging mini-games, earn Karma, and unlock pivotal story moments via interactive dance sequences.
Unique features such as journaling and spirit possession Mechanics allow for deep emotional and narrative exploration.
Greg Johnson's involvement brings notable pedigree to 'Dancing with Ghosts.' With a legacy stretching across four decades—including influential titles like ToeJam & Earl, the Starflight series, and Doki-Doki Universe—Johnson continues to blend personal and cultural storytelling within engaging gameplay.
This project emerged from Johnson’s own experiences with profound personal loss, including the passing of his daughter and his family's devastation during the 2023 Lahaina fires.
Drawing further from his multicultural background and fluency in Thai, Johnson collaborated closely with Thailand-based artists Ferrai Duanghathai and Tanta Voratawankul, animation studio Bit Egg, and returning partner Ferry Halim from Indonesia to authentically portray the game’s Southeast Asian setting and spiritual themes.
In a statement shared by HumaNature Studios, Johnson reflected on the project's emotional heart: "I’ve endured dark times, but the gestures of kindness from others brought hope.
Our goal with 'Dancing with Ghosts' is to create a joyful, meaningful experience for anyone who needs it.
We are grateful for the support as we share this journey with the world."
'Dancing with Ghosts' will debut on the Nintendo Switch in 2026.
Stay tuned for updates on the Kickstarter launch this October, and be sure to follow HumaNature Studios for more news as the project unfolds.
