CD Projekt RED has officially unveiled a significant technical leap for the Nintendo Switch 2 launch lineup, confirming that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will be the first title on the platform to leverage Nvidia's advanced Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology.
This marks a pivotal moment for the Nintendo Switch 2, setting the stage for next-generation visuals and performance on Nintendo's upcoming hybrid console.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, developed by CD Projekt RED, is set to launch as a marquee title for the new hardware.
The game's arrival on the Switch 2 is notable not only for bringing a critically acclaimed AAA experience to Nintendo fans, but also for its trailblazing implementation of DLSS.
Previously exclusive to Nvidia's GeForce RTX graphics cards, DLSS uses artificial intelligence and machine learning via Nvidia's Tensor cores to upscale lower-resolution images in real time, delivering higher frame rates and sharper image quality.
A representative from CD Projekt RED explained to Digital Foundry, "We are utilizing a specific version of DLSS designed for the Nintendo Switch 2, fully powered by Nvidia's advanced Tensor cores.
Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition employs DLSS across all four graphics modes: handheld and docked configurations, each with quality and performance options."
DLSS support had been confirmed for the Nintendo Switch 2; however, Cyberpunk 2077 is now the first officially announced game to feature comprehensive DLSS integration on the platform.
This inclusion is expected to be instrumental for the Switch 2, enabling it to deliver a fluid gaming experience for graphically demanding, cross-platform releases.
According to Richard Leadbetter of Digital Foundry, CD Projekt RED has committed to offering multiple graphics modes for Cyberpunk 2077 on Switch 2.
In docked mode, players will have the option to select between a 30fps "quality" mode and a 40fps "performance" mode, both rendering at 1080p resolution with dynamic resolution scaling in conjunction with DLSS.
The 40fps mode specifically targets TVs operating at 120Hz, striking a balance in smoothness between conventional 30fps and 60fps outputs.
For handheld gamers, "quality" mode delivers a 1080p image powered by DLSS with dynamic resolution scaling at 30fps, while "performance" mode reduces the output to 720p, aims for 40fps frame rates, and is optimized for the handheld’s 120Hz display mode.
Both approaches highlight the flexibility DLSS grants developers on Nintendo’s evolving platforms.
With the anticipated release of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition on Nintendo Switch 2, CD Projekt RED is positioning itself at the forefront of technical innovation within Nintendo’s ecosystem.
This advancement not only reinforces the Switch 2’s compatibility with contemporary AAA standards but also showcases how advanced upscaling technologies like DLSS can empower more immersive and visually dynamic handheld gaming experiences.
As Cyberpunk 2077 prepares for its eShop debut and Switch 2 aims to close the gap with other major consoles, the collaboration between CD Projekt RED, Nvidia, and Nintendo signals a promising future for high-performance games on Nintendo’s next-generation system.
