Claymatic Games is set to reintroduce one of indie gaming’s most beloved cult shooters, announcing a global release date for Platypus Reclayed on September 18th, 2025.
This comprehensive remake of Platypus, the iconic claymation shoot ’em up originally developed by Squashy Software, will launch simultaneously on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Mac.
Originally released in 2002, Platypus quickly established itself as a unique presence in the shooter genre, praised for its handcrafted plasticine visuals and innovative gameplay.
The game was the brainchild of New Zealand developer Anthony Flack, who, despite facing significant adversity—including the loss of his home and equipment in a house fire—managed to save and complete the project with help from friends and family.
After a digital re-release by Retro64, Platypus found a resurgence of popularity, leading to ports on platforms such as PSP and Xbox 360, and spawning a sequel, Platypus II, in 2007.
Now, decades after its initial success, Claymatic Games—led by Flack himself—has taken on the challenge of reimagining Platypus for modern audiences.
In a statement to Time Extension, Flack said that interest in the game has never truly waned: “People never stopped reaching out about Platypus, and there’s continued demand, even with some compatibility issues on new PCs.
It’s long overdue that fans get the updated version they deserve.”
Platypus Reclayed is much more than a visual overhaul.
The remake has been reconstructed from scratch, boasting entirely new 4K widescreen clay-animation assets and enhanced gameplay features.
A trailer debuted in November 2024 showcased the meticulous new graphics and confirmed the addition of content such as new stages, remixed levels, more powerful weapons, and multiple game modes—including Practice and a single-life Score Attack challenge.
Players can also expect adjustable difficulty settings, a remixed high-quality soundtrack, and a new stage exclusive to the remake.
Flack explained that he initially considered upscaling the original assets but quickly realized that modern photography equipment offered a level of quality that made it worthwhile to remake every clay model from the ground up.
"There was no way around it but to redo everything," he noted.
"I wanted to leverage everything I’ve learned in the last two decades to capture what made the game timeless—its simplicity and flow—while also making improvements that modern audiences will appreciate."
Both Platypus and Platypus II have maintained a dedicated fan base on Steam, with the original remaining available for purchase.
A free demo for Platypus Reclayed is currently accessible on Steam for those interested in a hands-on preview ahead of its September launch.
With the anticipated release across Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, Platypus Reclayed stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of creative, handcrafted games.
As classic titles find new audiences through remakes and remasters, Claymatic Games’ dedication to authenticity and innovation is set to introduce Platypus to a whole new generation of players.
