Description

Rick Dangerous DX: Fan-Made Sega Mega Drive Port Revives Core Design Classic Rick Dangerous, the beloved 2D platformer, has maintained a cult status since its original 1989 release by renowned UK developer Core Design.

The game’s Indiana Jones-inspired escapades first captivated players on platforms like the Commodore Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, and ZX Spectrum, delivering challenging, trap-laden adventures.

Notably, however, the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis in North America) never received an official port, leaving a gap for fans of the 16-bit system.

This year, that gap has finally been filled, thanks to a dedicated fan project, Rick Dangerous DX, now available as a free download. Developed by DomKid of the Z-Team, Rick Dangerous DX is a remarkable fan recreation that enhances and commemorates the legacy of the original Core Design title.

Built from the ground up using Earok’s versatile Scorpion Engine, this port aims to deliver an experience faithful to the original while introducing quality-of-life improvements and visual upgrades for the Mega Drive’s capabilities.

The project draws inspiration from Magic Team’s 2008 Nintendo Wii edition and Z-Team’s own Amiga remake released in 2023, combining elements from different adaptations to create a definitive edition for the Sega audience. Rick Dangerous DX features updated, remastered graphics tailored to the Mega Drive’s color palette, a newly designed title screen, and improved performance that take advantage of the system’s 16-bit hardware.

The game preserves the platformer’s famously challenging design—complete with devious traps and perilous jumps—paying homage to the spirit of the original while making it accessible to a new wave of retro gaming enthusiasts. According to the developer, the new edition of Rick Dangerous is compatible with real Genesis hardware via flashcarts such as Everdrive, and also performs flawlessly on modern Sega Mega Drive / Genesis emulators.

The game was released on June 14, 2024, on itch.io, where retro fans can download and play it at no cost. This community-driven project not only celebrates Rick Dangerous’s enduring appeal but also showcases the vitality and passion of the retro gaming scene.

By giving Sega Mega Drive owners the opportunity to experience a classic that previously eluded the platform, DomKid and Z-Team have cemented their contribution to retro game preservation and fan-led development. Rick Dangerous DX stands as a shining example of how fan dedication and modern tools can bridge gaps in gaming history, delivering iconic titles to new platforms for longtime fans and curious newcomers alike.

To experience the enhanced adventure, visit itch.io and download Rick Dangerous DX for free—whether you’re playing on real hardware or emulation, the perilous world of Rick Dangerous awaits a new generation of adventurers.
