Kyoto Xanadu Announced for Nintendo Switch 2 at Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase

Nihon Falcom, the esteemed Japanese game developer renowned for franchises like Ys and The Legend of Heroes, has officially announced "Kyoto Xanadu" for both Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch.

The announcement was made during this week’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, highlighting the studio’s commitment to supporting Nintendo's platforms with compelling new titles.

"Kyoto Xanadu" is an action RPG set in a unique alternate reality where Kyoto serves as Japan’s capital city.

The game invites players to step into the shoes of a high school student who uncovers a massive labyrinth—known as Xanadu—concealed beneath their school.

As monsters begin to emerge from the depths of this mysterious labyrinth, players are pressed to confront these threats head-on. Beyond battling dangerous adversaries, "Kyoto Xanadu" places significant emphasis on daily life within Kyoto.

Players are encouraged to foster relationships with local residents and fellow students, providing a blend of social simulation that enhances the game’s depth.

The bonds formed throughout the protagonist’s journey directly impact their strength and abilities in the labyrinth, offering a deep and rewarding loop of character progression. Nihon Falcom President Toshihiro Kondo addressed the community during the Nintendo Direct presentation, emphasizing the team's passion for crafting both an engaging narrative and immersive modern Kyoto setting.

According to Kondo, the development team aims to balance action-packed dungeon crawling with the slice-of-life elements that have become hallmarks of the company’s storytelling approach.

The studio is leveraging the enhanced capabilities of Nintendo Switch 2, ensuring an elevated gameplay and visual experience while maintaining compatibility for Nintendo Switch users. "Kyoto Xanadu" is scheduled for worldwide release in Summer 2026.

The game will be available both physically at retail and digitally via the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

This multi-platform launch underscores Falcom’s intention to reach both existing Switch players and those upgrading to the next-generation hardware. The reveal came alongside an official trailer and a set of early screenshots that showcase the striking reimagined Kyoto cityscape, as well as the formidable enemies players will face within the labyrinth. With a proven track record in delivering JRPG hits, Nihon Falcom’s "Kyoto Xanadu" looks to be an anticipated addition to the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 library.

Its Summer 2026 release places it squarely in a competitive window for RPG fans, promising action, character-driven storytelling, and a fresh take on Japanese urban fantasy for console gamers.
