Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Introduces New Challenges and Leaderboards for Speedrunning Fans

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition continues to celebrate the rich history of retro gaming with a fresh set of exclusive speedrunning challenges, now available for all players on the Nintendo Switch.

Developed and published by Nintendo, this title lets players test their prowess across more than 150 handpicked moments from 13 beloved NES games, bringing iconic levels and objectives back into the spotlight for a new generation of gamers. Starting this week and running until June 23 at 1:59 a.m.

PT, a rotation of special time-limited challenges has been introduced to the game.

These classic moments include “Super Leaf in the Wind” from Super Mario Bros.

3, “Death Mountain Duel” from The Legend of Zelda, “One on 1-1” from Super Mario Bros, “Every Last Eggplant” from Ice Climber, and “Underworld Wonder” from Kid Icarus.

Each challenge is designed to push players’ skills in platforming, puzzle-solving, and speed to their limits.

Participants can attempt to climb the leaderboards by improving their scores and times before the challenge period ends. Nintendo encourages players to review their performances from previous competitions.

By logging into the game, players can not only see how they ranked globally and within their birth-year cohort, but also watch replays of the fastest speedruns for each challenge.

These top-player demonstrations offer valuable insights and techniques, helping everyone from seasoned veterans to newcomers find new ways to refine their strategies. Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition leverages the Nintendo Switch Online service, allowing players to compete asynchronously with speedrunners around the globe.

A Nintendo Switch Online membership (sold separately) and Nintendo Account are required to access online features, including the global leaderboards and replay functionality.

Players can also challenge friends locally for couch multiplayer sessions, with additional accessories sold separately.
