Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition Announced: FPGA Revival Brings Classic C64 to Modern Audiences

Commodore International has officially announced its return to the hardware market after more than three decades, debuting the Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition—a modern, FPGA-based recreation of the legendary Commodore 64.

This new release is powered by the AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA, aiming to provide enthusiasts and retro gamers with an authentic yet updated classic computing experience. The Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition represents the company's first official hardware offering since its relaunch under new ownership.

Pre-orders are now live on the company's website, with customers able to choose between three distinct models: the BASIC Beige ($299), Starlight Edition in translucent, color-changing finish ($349.99), and the premium Founders Edition in gold ($499.99).

Each unit comes fully assembled and features a suite of modern interfaces, including HDMI output, Wi-Fi, and USB connectivity, while maintaining the renowned C64 look and feel. At the core of the Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition is an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA, running a highly accurate recreation of the original motherboard architecture.

According to information shared on the official Commodore website, this hardware is "at least 99% compatible" with thousands of 1980s and 1990s games, cartridges, and peripherals—a testament to its comprehensive approach to compatibility and preservation. Industry watchers, including sources at Tom's Hardware, have highlighted that the new system is inspired by the Ultimate 64 Elite-II board designed by acclaimed engineer Gideon Zweijtzer, whose work is directly credited on Commodore’s official site as a launch partner.

This partnership lends engineering authenticity and reliability to the Ultimate Edition’s launch. Regarding shipping, Commodore International states that fulfilling pre-orders is expected to begin in October or November 2025.

However, the company is transparent in noting that these dates are not guaranteed, as design and feature adjustments could still occur before the hardware goes into full production. From a technical perspective, the system is equipped with 128MB DDR2 RAM and 16MB NOR flash memory, with HDMI-certified 1080p output supporting both PAL (50Hz) and NTSC (60Hz).

Analog video options are also available, including CVBS, S-Video, and RGB via DIN-8.

For audio purists, the inclusion of dual SID sockets with automatic voltage and filter detection, along with advanced FPGA SID emulation, ensures accurate sound reproduction.

A 66-key mechanical keyboard featuring Gateron Pro 3.0 switches, original C64 layout, full NKRO, and configurable RGB lighting enhances both usability and nostalgia. Storage compatibility is robust, supporting modern USB thumb drives and a range of classic Commodore file formats.

Full ROM licensing or guided ROM setup is included on first boot, and the system promises future C64 OS support.

Integrated Ultimate-II+ functionality offers smooth tape emulation and DMA loading for authentic retro workflows. The reboot of Commodore International is spearheaded by Christian "Peri Fractic" Simpson, who detailed his acquisition journey on his Retro Recipes YouTube channel.

As outlined in official communications, final payment for the company buyout is deferred, but Commodore assures customers that contractual agreements with the IP’s previous owner guarantee the ongoing manufacture of these systems, irrespective of acquisition complexities. The Commodore 64 Ultimate Edition sees the return of a classic brand, delivering the legacy of the original C64 to both seasoned retro enthusiasts and new generations eager to experience one of computing’s most iconic platforms.
