ModRetro Chromatic Handheld Secures Partnerships with Ubisoft, Atari, and Argonaut Games

ModRetro, the innovative hardware developer behind the FPGA-based Game Boy Color clone known as the Chromatic, has solidified its place in the retro gaming market with a series of high-profile announcements.

Following a period where the device was unavailable due to high demand, ModRetro has confirmed that the Chromatic is now “back in stock — permanently,” ensuring that enthusiasts can continue to experience this modern recreation of Nintendo's iconic handheld console. The newly restocked Chromatic is available in a fresh 'Cloud' colorway and comes in two distinct models: the Gorilla Glass version at $199.99 and the luxurious Sapphire Glass edition at $299.99.

The Sapphire Glass boasts near-diamond hardness, a feature commonly found only in ultra-premium timepieces, enhancing both durability and visual appeal for collectors and players alike. Accompanying the hardware relaunch is an impressive slate of software announcements.

ModRetro is set to re-release the classic title 'Sabrina: The Animated Series – Zapped!', originally developed by WayForward Technologies and first launched in 2000.

This release is complemented by a lineup of new indie titles, including the side-scrolling Metroidvania, Wicked Plague; the precision platformer, Self-Simulated; the puzzle adventure, First Contact Protocol; and the puzzle platformer, Gravitorque.

All titles will be published under the ModRetro label and offered in high-quality physical packaging, delivering an authentic retro gaming experience. Demonstrating the company’s growing influence, ModRetro has also confirmed upcoming collaborations with several renowned industry giants, including Ubisoft, Atari, and Argonaut Games.

In its official statement, the company shared that more details on these landmark partnerships would be unveiled later in the year, indicating a continued investment in bringing iconic IPs and new experiences to the Chromatic platform. A notable advancement in the Chromatic ecosystem is the introduction of Cart Clinic, a proprietary firmware tool.

According to ModRetro, Cart Clinic enables users to connect their Chromatic device to a computer to update cartridges with bug fixes and bonus features, mirroring the update capabilities found on modern, internet-connected systems like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5.

This brings a modern convenience to retro hardware, allowing developers to support their titles post-launch. To enhance the overall gaming experience, ModRetro has also launched a series of new accessories, including the Rechargeable Power Core ($29.99), Link Cable ($14.99), Mod Kit ($14.99), and officially branded Koss Porta Pro headphones ($49.99).
