Citadelum Set for January 2026 Launch on Nintendo Switch 2 With Enhanced Features

Abylight, a respected name in independent game development and publishing, has officially announced that Citadelum, its acclaimed classical-era city building strategy title, will come to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

The release is scheduled for January 22, 2026, positioning Citadelum among the very first wave of titles purpose-built for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.

Citadelum is renowned for blending deep strategy gameplay with city management and historical simulation, challenging players to build, govern, and expand ancient cities while navigating political intrigue and the favor of the gods.

The Nintendo Switch 2 release will feature the major "Julius 2.0" update, enhancing every aspect of the experience from graphics to gameplay depth. Abylight confirmed that the Switch 2 edition of Citadelum will include all content from the significant Julius 2.0 update.

Players can look forward to five comprehensive historical campaigns: The Rise of the Roman Empire with Augustus, The Last Conqueror of Britannia, The Lost Eagles of Germania, The Gallic Wars featuring Julius Caesar, and The Third Punic War.

Each campaign offers unique challenges and ambitions, as players command legions, negotiate diplomacy, and manage city growth through tumultuous eras. Noteworthy technical upgrades will be introduced thanks to Switch 2's enhanced hardware.

Citadelum will support 1080p resolution in handheld mode and native 4K output when docked, setting a new visual standard for strategy games on Nintendo platforms.

Abylight engineers have reworked the user interface and controls for intuitive gamepad play and portable sessions, maximizing comfort and accessibility.

In addition to vast map exploration and evolving trade routes, the Switch 2 version will include every biome previously available on PC—encompassing regions like Italy, Hispania, Egypt, Germania, Britannia, Gallia, and Carthage.

Deep gameplay systems such as intricate production chains, diplomacy, legal trials, side missions, public health management, and the construction of monumental wonders are all present, delivering a rich simulation experience. Combat receives a significant focus as well, with a comprehensive battle system providing options for auto-battle, direct orders, and advanced simulations.

These layers of strategy allow players to dictate the fate of their cities amidst the threats of warfare and supernatural intervention. Citadelum will launch as a digital download on the Nintendo eShop, coinciding with a major push of Nintendo Switch 2 titles in early 2026.

Abylight’s development team expressed their pride that Citadelum stands among the first 25 games tailor-made for Switch 2, underscoring the studio's commitment to innovation on new Nintendo hardware. As excitement builds for the Nintendo Switch 2 library, Citadelum’s robust feature set and historical depth secure its place as one of the platform’s most anticipated strategy offerings.
