Citadelum Launches on Nintendo Switch 2: Ancient Rome City Builder Arrives January 2026

Abylight Studios has officially announced that Citadelum, its highly anticipated Ancient Rome city-builder, will launch on Nintendo Switch 2 worldwide on January 22, 2026.

Developed by Abylight Barcelona, Citadelum lets players step into the sandals of a Roman leader, challenging them to build settlements, manage resources, and expand their cities into thriving centers of civilization. Citadelum stands out in the city-building genre with its rich historical setting and mechanics rooted in Roman culture.

Players are tasked with establishing trade routes across a dynamic world map, training and commanding legions in battle, and interacting with the Roman Pantheon.

Each decision—whether to seek the gods’ favor or risk their disapproval—affects the trajectory of your empire. The Nintendo Switch 2 release introduces several new features with Version 2.0 "Julius." Among the highlights are five expansive historic campaigns: The Rise of the Roman Empire, The Last Conqueror of Britannia, The Lost Eagles of Germania, The Gallic Wars (featuring Julius Caesar), and The Third Punic War.

These scenarios offer players distinct challenges and perspectives on Rome’s legendary conquests. In a statement outlining Citadelum’s key features, Abylight Studios emphasized the improvements made for the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.

The game boasts a revamped user interface and controls tailored for both gamepad and portable play, ensuring smooth gameplay whether docked or on the go.

Players can experience Citadelum in 1080p resolution in portable mode and up to 4K while docked—maximizing the visual potential of Nintendo’s home console successor. Gamers will also enjoy the inclusion of every biome from the PC version, including iconic regions such as Italy, Hispania, Egypt, Germania, Britannia, Gallia, and Carthage.

The depth of gameplay extends to complex production chains, diplomacy, judicial trials, secondary missions, public health management, and the construction of wonders.

Citadelum also delivers a comprehensive battle system, with options for auto-battle, manual orders, and realistic combat simulations. To further enhance the player experience, Abylight Studios has implemented various quality-of-life improvements in this release.

The digital edition of Citadelum will be available exclusively on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2, making it accessible to players around the globe. With its meticulous attention to Roman history and impressive suite of features, Citadelum positions itself as a must-play city builder for strategy enthusiasts and Nintendo Switch 2 owners when it arrives in January 2026.
