Cyberpunk 2077 Sees 75% Physical Sales on Nintendo Switch 2, CD Projekt Red Confirms
As the gaming industry continues its steady shift toward digital distribution, pockets of dedicated physical game purchasers remain—especially on Nintendo hardware.
This trend was highlighted in the recent launch of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2, with developer CD Projekt Red revealing remarkable sales data that bucks the digital-first trend.
According to the company’s latest financial results, 75% of Cyberpunk 2077 sales for Switch 2 have come from physical cartridges rather than digital downloads via the Nintendo eShop.
This notable statistic emerged during a quarterly financial results presentation by CD Projekt Red, the renowned Polish developer behind Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher series.
The report not only detailed revenue and operating costs but also provided valuable insights into purchasing behaviors on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.
While much of the financial breakdown focused on internal operations, the sales distribution sparked interest among fans and analysts alike.
Discussing the strong physical sales, CD Projekt Red CEO Michal Novakovski addressed investors, stating, "We believe that the combination of high-quality game enhancements exclusive to Switch 2 and the decision to provide the entire Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition on a single cartridge has positioned us well to capture the attention of the console’s expanding user base.
As of June, approximately 70% of our sales were physical copies, which we see as a testament to our approach.”
The success of Cyberpunk 2077’s physical edition is in sharp contrast to sales trends reported by other third-party developers on Nintendo Switch 2.
While many ports of older titles from other platforms have experienced sluggish starts on the new hardware, Cyberpunk 2077’s strong physical performance stands out.
Part of this appears to be the decision by CD Projekt Red to forgo controversial Game-Key Cards—often criticized for requiring large downloads—instead opting for a full-game, 64 GB cartridge containing all content, negating the need for additional downloads.
Since its debut on the Nintendo Switch 2, Cyberpunk 2077 has garnered praise for its technical performance and support for keyboard and mouse controls, further broadening its appeal on Nintendo’s latest system.
This commitment to a complete and accessible physical product for Switch 2 enthusiasts has clearly resonated with consumers seeking ownership and convenience.
CD Projekt Red’s transparency about sales figures and user preferences provides important data points for the games industry, as physical and digital distribution continue to vie for player attention.
With Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition setting a new benchmark for physical game adoption on Switch 2, it remains to be seen if other developers will follow suit in optimizing their releases for Nintendo’s growing audience.
