Description

Breath of Fire IV—the beloved role-playing game from Capcom—has made its DRM-free debut on GOG, as part of the digital retailer's ongoing video game preservation program.

The launch not only broadens GOG's growing catalog of retro classics but also secures the future of this iconic title on modern PCs, thanks to new technical upgrades and a focus on long-term compatibility. Originally released for the PlayStation in 2000 (with a European launch in 2001), Breath of Fire IV is widely regarded as a landmark entry in Capcom's renowned RPG series.

Set in a world of magic and myth, the story follows Ryu—a young protagonist gifted with the ability to transform into dragons—and his alliance with a spellcasting princess and seasoned warriors.

Together, they embark on a quest to thwart the resurrected emperor Fou Lou, weaving an epic narrative emblematic of the classic JRPG era.

Three years after its console debut, the game was brought to PCs, further cementing its legacy among role-playing fans worldwide. According to official statements from GOG, this latest release has been meticulously optimized to ensure compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11 systems.

The title features support for both English and Japanese languages, catering to the preferences of original fans and new players alike.

Visual fidelity receives a notable boost with the inclusion of an upgraded DirectX renderer, as well as several new display options—such as Windowed mode, V-Sync, Anti-Aliasing, and enhanced gamma correction—allowing users greater control over their experience.

In addition, the updated audio engine restores missing environmental sounds from prior versions and provides extra configuration flexibility, offering a richer and more authentic play session. One of the key initiatives behind GOG’s preservation program is to guarantee ongoing update support for games in the event they are removed from active sale.

Purchasers of Breath of Fire IV can expect continuous compatibility updates, underpinning GOG's commitment to digital preservation and consumer access. In addition to Breath of Fire IV, GOG also revealed a slate of other renowned games joining its preservation initiative.

These include: Ultima™ Underworld 1+2, Ultima™ 9: Ascension, Worlds of Ultima™ : The Savage Empire, Ultima™ Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams, Worms: Armageddon, Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood, Realms of the Haunting, Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon, and Stonekeep.

Each title will benefit from the same DRM-free assurance and technical support, further expanding GOG’s repository of classic gaming history. Breath of Fire IV is now available for purchase on GOG at £8.99, inviting both newcomers and longtime fans to rediscover one of Capcom’s most celebrated RPGs—now preserved and rejuvenated for a new era of PC gaming.
