Nintendo Switch 2 has made a remarkable debut in the global gaming market, drawing praise from industry heavyweights like Capcom.

According to a recent interview published by renowned Japanese outlet Nikkei, Capcom president Haruhiro Tsujimoto expressed genuine surprise at the overwhelming consumer demand and sales performance of Nintendo’s latest hybrid console.

Despite launching at the highest price point ever for a Nintendo console—¥49,980 (tax included) in Japan, roughly half the price of its Sony counterpart—sales have already surpassed eight million units, significantly exceeding Capcom’s internal projections.

Capcom’s leadership was candid about the scale of the Switch 2’s success.

Tsujimoto noted that "the response from customers was better than we had expected," emphasizing that the high price did not deter demand.

He explained that while regional pricing varies, the Switch 2’s launch confirmed how cost-aware many gaming consumers are, especially when compared to platforms like the PlayStation 5, which retails for nearly ¥80,000 in Japan.

Factoring in additional expenses for games and online subscriptions, the PlayStation 5 can cost consumers close to ¥100,000 at the time of purchase—a level Tsujimoto indicated is particularly challenging for younger gamers. The interview in Nikkei dove into Capcom’s outlook for its blockbuster titles, especially Monster Hunter Wilds.

Tsujimoto underscored that the high cost of next-gen console hardware, specifically PlayStation 5, has presented a challenge for access to this anticipated title.

In contrast, Switch 2’s relatively lower price of entry could broaden its user base and increase game sales potential across the industry, an observation shared by both Capcom and other developers closely monitoring the market. Nintendo Switch 2’s impressive sales momentum demonstrates not only the enduring strength of Nintendo’s brand and hardware innovation but also its ability to compete in a highly competitive market.

The platform’s quick rise past eight million units sold cements it as another commercial triumph for Nintendo—a company already celebrated for the massive global success of the original Nintendo Switch.

Capcom’s acknowledgment further highlights the strategic importance of the Switch 2 for third-party publishers, who may now be even more inclined to bring major titles to the Nintendo ecosystem, including future Monster Hunter releases. As the Switch 2 gains traction in 2025 and beyond, industry watchers and gamers alike will be paying close attention to how publishers like Capcom expand their support for the console.

For now, the hybrid platform’s strong start signals a bright future for both Nintendo and its partners, reaffirming the brand’s staying power in an evolving industry.
