For years, dedicated fans have urged Capcom to breathe new life into the beloved Dino Crisis franchise, either through a fresh installment or a modern remake.
Despite this vocal support, the series—known for blending survival horror with dinosaur action—has remained dormant since its last major entry.
Behind the scenes, however, there have been several attempts by Capcom to resurrect Dino Crisis, according to credible sources in the gaming industry.
The original Dino Crisis, released for the PlayStation in 1999, was developed and published by Capcom, quickly gaining acclaim for its suspenseful gameplay and innovative use of dinosaurs in a survival horror setting.
The franchise spawned sequels and spin-offs but gradually faded from the company's release schedule, even as remakes of other Capcom classics like Resident Evil saw great success, including on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
Noted Capcom insider Dusk Golem revealed that internal efforts to revisit Dino Crisis have happened more than once in the past decade.
The first significant attempt emerged from Capcom Vancouver, the studio best known for their work on the Dead Rising series.
Following initial development, however, Capcom Vancouver was closed in 2018, which brought an early end to that version of the project.
Capcom did not stop there; another team at the company tried again in recent years to develop a Dino Crisis remake.
This attempt, however, also failed to meet the high expectations and quality standards set by Capcom’s leadership.
As a result, this more recent remake project was also canceled before it was publicly announced or previewed to fans.
Dusk Golem described these efforts using clear terms: Capcom pursued the idea of bringing back Dino Crisis, but, "in both cases, the results did not align with management’s satisfaction, leading to the projects being shelved."
While fans regularly revisit Dino Crisis through legacy collections and nostalgic retrospectives, there is currently no official remake or new game planned for platforms like the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, or PC.
Instead, Capcom continues to focus on their stellar lineup, celebrating critical and commercial successes in franchises such as Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.
The story of Dino Crisis’ canceled revival attempts underscores the challenges of developing for a legacy franchise with a passionate fan base and high expectations.
Although hopes remain among the community for a future return, as of now, Capcom’s development priorities lie elsewhere, making the original Dino Crisis titles enduring favorites but without a confirmed path to modern consoles via remake or reboot.
