Quake 4 The Awakening alpha found on vintage PC and released on GitHub

A previously unseen alpha build of The Awakening, the cancelled expansion for Quake 4, has been made publicly available on GitHub after being recovered from the hard drive of a vintage PC.

The base game, Quake 4, was developed by Raven Software and released for PC and Xbox 360 in 2005.

The Awakening was being developed as an expansion by Ritual Entertainment before Activision cancelled the project.

According to the user who posted the files to GitHub, the build was discovered on a hard drive inside a vintage machine purchased online.

The contributor said the find came at a difficult personal moment and described it as life-changing; they reported the discovery occurred during a divorce and called the recovery of the build an intense, emotional event.

The files are now hosted on GitHub for preservation purposes so researchers and fans can inspect and run the alpha.

Evidence supporting the authenticity of the build includes video uploads showing in-game footage from the alpha and configuration files that contain the names of developers associated with the original project.

A community member posted video of the first three missions from the build, and files from the archive reference developers who worked on the expansion during its development period.

Quake 4 is the direct sequel to Quake II and follows Corporal Matthew Kane as humanity continues its conflict with the Strogg.

Raven Software led development on the 2005 release, which arrived on PC and Xbox 360 and received generally positive reviews at launch.

Work on The Awakening had reportedly reached around 95 percent completion before it was cancelled by Activision, leaving the expansion unreleased until now.

The GitHub release allows preservation-minded fans, modders, and historians to examine the alpha build directly.

For researchers interested in build history and abandoned projects, this release provides a rare look at a near-complete commercial expansion that otherwise remained out of public view.

The files and community documentation are available on the contributor's GitHub page for download and study.
