Description

After more than two decades as one of gaming’s most successful franchises, Call of Duty is officially headed to the big screen.

Paramount and Activision have confirmed a major deal to produce a Call of Duty movie adaptation in collaboration with Skydance, aiming to bring the blockbuster first-person shooter experience to mainstream theaters.

This marks a significant milestone for Activision, which has overseen Call of Duty's meteoric rise since its original launch in 2003, with the series now ranking among the world’s best-selling video game franchises. The movie is set to be developed under the Skydance label, with support from both Paramount and Activision.

Skydance CEO David Ellison expressed his excitement over the project, highlighting his personal connection to the franchise.

"Being a longtime fan of Call of Duty, having spent innumerable hours from the franchise’s early WWII stories to Modern Warfare and Black Ops, this opportunity is a real dream come true," Ellison shared with Deadline.

He emphasized that earning the trust of both Activision and the global player base to translate Call of Duty's rich storytelling to film is a tremendous honor and responsibility for the team. This isn’t Activision’s first foray into adapting Call of Duty for cinema.

Back in February 2018, the publisher announced plans for a film version in partnership with acclaimed director Stefano Sollima, known for Sicario 2: Soldado.

The vision at the time was to create an intense, realistic adaptation, but that iteration eventually stalled during development and failed to move forward.

Now, with a fresh partnership in place and renewed commitment, Activision and Paramount are positioned to finally bring the franchise to theaters. Rob Kostich, President of Activision, commented on the announcement, stating that Paramount provides an ideal partnership to deliver the fast-paced, explosive action that defines the series.

According to Kostich, the upcoming film will stay true to the franchise’s core appeal, while expanding its universe for new and longtime fans alike.

"Our goal is clear: to craft an unforgettable blockbuster that excites our current community and attracts new fans to Call of Duty," Kostich explained to Deadline. Call of Duty remains a central property for Activision, having sold over 400 million copies worldwide across platforms like PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and, with recent news, a renewed commitment to Nintendo platforms such as the Nintendo Switch.

Microsoft has echoed this with a 10-year agreement to bring future Call of Duty titles to Nintendo hardware, ensuring that the series continues to reach new audiences on every major gaming platform. As anticipation builds for the Call of Duty movie, industry watchers and fans are eager to see how Paramount, Activision, and Skydance will translate the heart-pounding action and narrative depth from consoles and PCs to the silver screen.

With a development team steeped in both cinematic and interactive storytelling, the film adaptation of Call of Duty stands poised to join the ranks of the most ambitious video game movies to date.
