Boulder Dash Deluxe Arrives on Nintendo Switch, Reviving a Classic Gem-Collecting Adventure
The legendary puzzle franchise Boulder Dash, first introduced in 1984 on Atari platforms, is set to debut its newest iteration, Boulder Dash Deluxe, on the Nintendo Switch this Thursday, September 9th.
This marks the latest chapter in one of gaming’s most enduring series, known for its addictive gem-collecting action and creative level design.
Over the decades, Boulder Dash has inspired more than 22 sequels and redesigns, including Boulder Dash-XL 3D for the Nintendo 3DS, making its legacy one of remarkable longevity.
Developed by BBG Entertainment, Boulder Dash Deluxe brings back the iconic protagonist, Rockford, with a modern visual overhaul.
Players will navigate an expansive series of challenging underground mazes, collecting gems and dodging dynamic hazards.
Notably, this version introduces an all-new design for Rockford, along with a suite of fresh gameplay elements and worlds crafted for Nintendo Switch audiences.
A highlight of Boulder Dash Deluxe is the inclusion of exclusive content designed by Peter Liepa, the original creator of Boulder Dash.
Liepa’s new "Liepa World" adds 20 never-before-seen levels to the game, offering puzzle fans some of the most intricate and creative challenges yet.
In a press release, BBG Entertainment emphasized the depth of this new installment, stating that Boulder Dash Deluxe features 180 brand-new levels and nine immersive new worlds, each rendered with upgraded graphics and unique textures.
Environments such as Macmarnua Sea and Urath Castle showcase the visual enhancements made possible on Switch hardware.
For long-time fans, the game provides a direct link to its origins by bundling 20 levels from the original 1984 release.
This allows newcomers and veterans alike to experience Boulder Dash’s foundational gameplay, now seamlessly playable on Nintendo Switch.
The game also boasts a variety of new enemy types, including opponents like octopuses, sharks, polar bears, and snow tigers—each designed to keep players on their toes and energize traditional level mechanics.
In addition to its robust single-player offering, Boulder Dash Deluxe is set to include online multiplayer functionality in a future update, further expanding replay value and community engagement.
Player customization options have also been significantly expanded, providing the ability to personalize Rockford’s appearance with various clothing, eyewear, and hairstyles.
Boulder Dash Deluxe will be available for purchase on the Nintendo eShop for £12.99 or its in-game equivalent pricing.
Its launch reaffirms Boulder Dash’s place in gaming history as both a nostalgic favorite and a contemporary puzzle staple.
As Peter Liepa has recently highlighted, returning to the franchise after more than 35 years has enabled the design of fresh, mind-bending levels specifically for a new generation of fans.
With modernized visuals, significant new content, and a nostalgic nod to its roots, Boulder Dash Deluxe is poised to captivate both classic arcade enthusiasts and puzzle newcomers on Nintendo Switch.
