Description

Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary is set to make its debut on Nintendo Switch on July 24, 2024, delivering a fresh take on the legendary puzzle game that first captured players’ imaginations in 1984.

Developed by BBG Entertainment, the updated edition brings a host of new features and refined gameplay for a new era of gamers while remaining rooted in the classic charm that has defined the series for decades.

The game will be available via the Nintendo eShop at a price point of £19.99/$19.99. Since its original release on platforms like the Commodore 64, Boulder Dash has built a legacy as one of the most iconic action-puzzle games in video game history.

Previous anniversaries have seen re-releases, but this 40th anniversary entry promises significant innovations for both veterans and newcomers.

Notably, players will be able to use a construction kit (level editor) to create, play, and share their own levels online, expanding on the replayability and community-driven creativity. According to BBG Entertainment, Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary is not only a tribute to the first three games (Boulder Dash I, II, and III), but also a modern overhaul.

A company spokesperson summarized their goals: "Our development team focused on authentically revitalizing the first three Boulder Dash entries on modern platforms and integrating new ideas like growing walls, slime, enemy generators, and eggs.

We have also included a level editor to let users worldwide create and share their own stages." The new offering boasts an impressive 180 wholly original and meticulously balanced levels, which include six brand-new worlds and three additional worlds created by dedicated fans.

The diverse cast lets players control Rockford—the series’ iconic protagonist—or select from two other heroes, each designed in alignment with the game’s original vision.

A graphical update ensures that the visuals blend the recognizable color palette of the classic games with contemporary themes, giving old-school fans a nostalgic journey while offering newcomers a visually appealing experience. Audio enthusiasts will appreciate the soundtrack, which is composed by Chris Huelsbeck, one of Germany’s most celebrated video game musicians.

His anticipated musical contributions continue his legacy from beloved franchises such as Giana Sisters, Turrican, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate. Beyond its core gameplay—navigating perilous caves, dodging enemies, and solving intricate puzzles to open level exits—Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary packs a collection of new items, obstacles, and gameplay mechanics, such as growing walls, slime hazards, and enemy generators.

These additions aim to offer fresh challenges and expand the classic formula. With its robust level editing and sharing features, Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary leverages the Nintendo Switch's platform strengths, ensuring easy access for players via the eShop and providing a hub for community exchange. For fans of the Boulder Dash series, puzzle game enthusiasts, and anyone interested in innovative level design and challenging gameplay, Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary is poised to be a standout release in the Switch’s puzzle game catalogue this summer.
