Fans of the Borderlands franchise have eagerly anticipated the arrival of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2, cementing the series' multi-platform legacy.
Developed by Gearbox Software, Borderlands 4 continues the franchise's acclaimed blend of loot-driven action and dark humor, bringing new characters, locations, and gameplay innovations to long-time followers and newcomers alike.
While the Nintendo Switch 2 releases on October 3, 2024, shortly after the September 12 debut on other platforms, some features will vary across hardware.
One notable difference for Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is the absence of split-screen co-op gameplay, a mode long cherished by fans for its shared-screen multiplayer excitement.
According to an official Gearbox Software support page, split-screen co-op will not be supported on Nintendo’s new hardware, whereas this functionality will be fully available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
The company has not disclosed detailed technical reasons behind this limitation but has ensured players that the core Borderlands 4 experience will remain intact on the Switch 2.
In a rephrased statement sourced from the publisher's official FAQ, it was clarified: "Players on Nintendo Switch 2 will enjoy the same thrilling Borderlands 4 adventure as their counterparts on other consoles, except for the split-screen option.
Importantly, full cross-play connectivity will be available with Epic Games Store, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S."
Cross-play support marks a significant step forward for the franchise on Nintendo platforms, enhancing multiplayer options and fostering a unified player community.
This mirrors a recent situation seen with WWE 2K25, where some features such as Community Creations and image uploading were absent from the Nintendo Switch 2 release but present in other versions.
With its October 3, 2024 launch slated for Nintendo Switch 2 and availability via the Nintendo eShop, Borderlands 4 is set to expand its player base while adapting to the unique capabilities and constraints of each platform.
Gearbox Software continues to deliver robust support and regular updates, further strengthening its reputation for cross-platform accessibility and player-focused design.
