Borderlands 4, the highly anticipated sequel in Gearbox Software’s acclaimed looter-shooter series, now has an official global launch date.
Gearbox Software and publisher 2K Games have announced that Borderlands 4 will be released on September 12, 2025, for PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
However, fans eager to experience the chaotic action on Nintendo’s next-generation hardware will need to wait a bit longer: the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 will not be available at launch and is scheduled to arrive later in 2025.
This news was initially confirmed through the official Borderlands website, which stated that while Borderlands 4 would be widely available on major platforms this September, the Nintendo Switch 2 release is still in development and will miss the initial rollout.
Gearbox Software has promised to share additional details about the Switch 2 version closer to its release window.
Since its debut in 2009, the Borderlands franchise has become renowned for its blend of over-the-top gunplay, irreverent humor, and cooperative gameplay, with previous installments achieving critical and commercial success.
Borderlands 3, released in 2019, quickly surpassed 8 million sales within its first year, solidifying the series’ status as one of 2K Games’ most successful franchises.
Gearbox’s commitment to expanding the series to new hardware platforms, including Nintendo’s evolving Switch ecosystem, further demonstrates the franchise’s enduring appeal.
The upcoming release on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S reflects the series’ continued focus on leveraging the technical advancements of current-generation consoles.
PC gamers will be able to access the game via both Steam and the Epic Games Store on day one, ensuring a broad reach across digital marketplaces.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 version slated for later in 2025, Gearbox Software is poised to deliver the Borderlands experience to a new generation of handheld and hybrid console players.
As anticipation builds for both the initial console launch and the subsequent Nintendo release, fans can look forward to further updates from Gearbox and 2K Games in the coming months.
