Borderlands 4 Post-Launch Roadmap Confirmed: Free Updates, Paid DLC, and Switch 2 Release
The much-anticipated Borderlands 4 by Gearbox and 2K Games is shaping up to be one of 2025’s biggest gaming events.
Following an official reveal, Gearbox has detailed its ambitious post-launch roadmap, promising fans a steady stream of free updates and paid downloadable content (DLC) that will expand the universe and keep player engagement high.
Known for its action-packed looter-shooter formula and iconic humor, the Borderlands series continues to set new standards, now preparing for a launch across PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and the Nintendo Switch 2 via the eShop.
Borderlands 4 is scheduled for release on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with the Nintendo Switch 2 version launching on October 3, 2025.
This marks a significant milestone as the franchise expands onto Nintendo’s next-generation platform, broadening its reach to new and returning players alike.
Gearbox’s official roadmap outlines a carefully planned mix of free updates and paid DLC.
In the initial months after release, players can expect free content drops featuring new weapons, character cosmetics, and in-game items.
The first of several paid Bounty Pack DLCs will also become available, offering substantial new experiences for those eager to deepen their journey on the planet Kairos.
According to Gearbox, the content plan includes additional free updates and a second paid Bounty Pack DLC, slated for Q1 2026.
Following these, the roadmap sets out a paid Story Pack, with more Bounty Packs and another Story Pack planned beyond Q1 2026.
To keep the action fresh, the development team will also introduce weekly in-game challenges, ensuring players always have new objectives and rewards to pursue.
A spokesperson for Gearbox explained: "Our developers are committed to delivering a Vault-load of post-launch content—this includes substantial new storylines and the introduction of two new Vault Hunters.
Players can look forward to ongoing in-game events on Kairos that keep the adventure evolving after launch."
Endgame content is a primary focus, with features such as Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode and dedicated loot drops detailed further on the official Borderlands 4 website.
These offerings underscore Gearbox’s goal to provide long-term value and replayability.
With its dual-pronged strategy of free updates and premium DLC, Borderlands 4 is poised to sustain a vibrant player community well after launch.
The upcoming debut on Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to fuel this growth, as Borderlands 4 arrives on the highly anticipated hardware’s eShop in early October 2025.
