Borderlands 4, the latest entry in the popular looter shooter franchise developed by Gearbox Software, has officially had its Nintendo Switch 2 launch delayed indefinitely.
Originally scheduled for an early October release on Nintendo's next-generation hardware, the decision by Gearbox reflects the studio’s commitment to quality and fan satisfaction, following a somewhat rocky launch on other platforms just two weeks prior.
The Borderlands series has long been recognized for its over-the-top action, co-op gameplay, and irreverent humor, becoming one of 2K Games’ most successful properties.
With Borderlands 4 aiming to continue this legacy, expectations among the franchise’s devoted fanbase and the wider gaming community were naturally high for the title’s debut on Nintendo Switch 2, leveraging the new hardware’s enhanced capabilities.
In an official statement shared on the Borderlands Twitter account on September 23, 2025, Gearbox addressed the community: "We want to inform our players that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 has been postponed.
This decision was not made lightly, but it is essential for us to deliver the best experience possible.
We require additional development time to further polish the game.
Additionally, we aim to align the Switch 2 release with the introduction of cross-save functionality, which we recognize is a highly requested feature.
We are committed to keeping our fans updated as we revise our launch plans."
This postponement follows a turbulent few weeks for Borderlands 4 after its recent multi-platform debut.
Reports from PC users highlighted performance issues, even on high-spec computers, while players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X also encountered technical difficulties.
The PS5 Pro version, in particular, has faced criticism for not fully utilizing the hardware’s capabilities.
These technical troubles are set against a backdrop of critical user feedback, which Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford addressed publicly, remarking that the game is "pretty damn optimal" and, in a contentious exchange, suggesting that dissatisfied players "code their own engines." Such remarks have only intensified scrutiny around the launch.
By delaying the Nintendo Switch 2 version, Gearbox and parent company 2K Games are hoping to ensure a smoother launch on the eShop and in retail, and to address concerns head-on.
The development team’s promise of further updates and the prioritization of cross-save support signal a clear intent to meet the high standards expected by Nintendo’s audience and the wider Borderlands community.
At present, no revised release date has been provided for Borderlands 4 on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Gearbox has pledged to communicate further announcements once the development roadmap has been finalized, ensuring players remain informed about the game's progress on the upcoming Nintendo platform.
