Borderlands 4, the highly-anticipated next entry in Gearbox Software’s flagship looter-shooter franchise, has officially been delayed on the Nintendo Switch 2.
The announcement came from 2K Games and Gearbox Software, both confirming via social media that the title will not meet its previously scheduled October 3, 2025, release date on Nintendo’s next-generation platform.
This comes as the latest significant update following Borderlands 4’s earlier launches on PC, Xbox X|S, and PlayStation 5 on September 12, 2025.
Borderlands 4 has garnered considerable attention with its bold shift toward an open-world design.
While early reviews from outlets like Push Square praised the expanded gameplay, technical performance was cited as an area needing improvement on console platforms.
In light of this feedback, the development team is determined to ensure the Switch 2 version meets the community’s expectations for quality and reliability.
In a recent statement, Gearbox Software reiterated their dedication to the player base, expressing that, “This was not a decision made hastily.” The company stressed that their chief goal is to provide the best possible gaming experience on the Nintendo Switch 2, requiring additional development time for refinement and optimization.
The statement further detailed ongoing efforts to align the release with the addition of cross-save support—a highly requested feature among Borderlands fans, enabling seamless progression across supported platforms.
A revised release date has yet to be announced.
Gearbox Software assures the community that it will update fans on the new launch schedule as soon as plans are fully finalized.
Additionally, as per Nintendo’s policies, all digital pre-orders for Borderlands 4 on Switch 2 will be canceled.
Players may manually cancel their pre-orders via the Nintendo eShop, or the process will be handled automatically beginning Friday, September 26, 2025.
Gamers with physical pre-orders are advised to consult with their respective retailers for further instructions.
Borderlands 4’s delay on the Nintendo Switch 2 underscores how developers are prioritizing quality and player feedback before bringing major franchises to new hardware.
Meanwhile, 2K Games and Gearbox Software’s consistent communication and commitment to cross-save integration promise a future-proof experience once Borderlands 4 finally lands on the Switch 2.
Fans can stay tuned to official channels for timely updates as the studios work to deliver the next great Borderlands adventure.
