Borderlands 4, the highly anticipated sequel from Gearbox Software, will not debut on Nintendo Switch 2 as previously scheduled.
Just over a week before its expected launch, the company has confirmed a delay for the Switch 2 version, signaling a renewed focus on delivering an exceptional gameplay experience alongside new features like cross save capability.
The Borderlands franchise, known for its dynamic co-op gameplay and distinctive visual style, has achieved global acclaim on multiple console generations, including prior entries ported to the Nintendo Switch platform.
The upcoming Borderlands 4 was slated to be among the first blockbuster releases for the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, generating excitement across both longtime Nintendo fans and the broader shooter community.
In an official announcement, Gearbox Software addressed the postponement.
The studio emphasized its dedication to delivering the best possible experience for fans, stating that additional development and polish are necessary to achieve the high standards expected of the series.
According to Gearbox, the extension will also allow the team to better align the launch of Borderlands 4 with the introduction of cross save functionality, a much-requested feature that will enable players to transfer progress across platforms.
"We are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development and polish time to do that," said Gearbox in a revised statement.
The company underscored the importance of cross saves and acknowledged ongoing work to make the feature available, with plans to update the community once revised release details are finalized.
As a result of the delay, all digital pre-orders made via the Nintendo eShop will be canceled.
Gearbox clarified that customers can initiate a cancellation themselves or allow the process to occur automatically beginning Friday, September 26.
For those with physical pre-orders, the studio advises contacting the respective retailer for further information or refund procedures.
Gearbox concluded the announcement by thanking fans for their ongoing feedback, support, and patience, noting that community enthusiasm continues to drive the project forward.
Updates regarding a new Borderlands 4 Nintendo Switch 2 release date will be shared as soon as the development schedule is realigned.
