Gearbox, the acclaimed studio behind the Borderlands franchise, has announced that the release of Borderlands 4 for Nintendo Switch 2 will be delayed indefinitely.
The game, which was one of the first major third-party titles confirmed for the upcoming Nintendo hardware, was originally scheduled to arrive on the Switch 2 in October, following its debut on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series platforms.
In an official statement shared across social media, Gearbox addressed the Switch 2 community, expressing a need for additional development time and a commitment to quality.
The company stated, "We understand the excitement from our fans about playing Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2.
However, after careful consideration, we have decided to postpone the release to ensure the game meets the high standards our players expect."
A key factor behind the delay is Gearbox’s desire to invest extra time in development and polishing the title for the Switch 2 hardware.
The company emphasized its dedication to delivering the best possible experience, echoing community feedback and highlighting that the ongoing work will allow the studio to better align the game’s launch with the integration of cross-save capabilities — a feature high on the wishlist for Borderlands fans.
"We want to make sure that cross-save functions are included at launch," Gearbox explained, underscoring the importance of this feature for players who access Borderlands 4 across multiple platforms.
The studio affirmed its ongoing commitment to transparency, promising to update fans once a revised release timeline is established.
Borderlands 4 launched earlier this year for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series consoles, and while the title generated significant anticipation and achieved notable sales milestones, it has faced criticism regarding performance issues on some platforms.
The delay of the Switch 2 version is widely viewed by industry observers as a proactive measure to prevent further technical setbacks and maintain the franchise’s strong reputation on new hardware.
This delay also marks a significant moment in the evolving library of the Nintendo Switch 2, highlighting the complexities developers face in bringing ambitious cross-platform experiences to the system.
As anticipation builds for more third-party support on Nintendo’s upcoming console, Gearbox’s decision underscores the importance of delivering polished experiences for the Switch 2’s user base.
Borderlands 4 remains available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series consoles.
Gearbox has urged players to stay tuned through its official channels for future updates regarding the Nintendo Switch 2 edition.
For now, fans can look forward to an eventual release that aims to uphold the high standards associated with both the Borderlands series and Nintendo platforms.
