Bitmap Books is preparing to publish Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu: The Ultimate History, the publisher’s fourth collaboration with SNK, with the release scheduled for May, Creative Director Sam Dyer confirmed. Best known for high-quality, collector-focused books chronicling classic gaming history, Bitmap Books was founded in 2014 and has built a reputation for premium binding, careful print runs, and thoughtful design.
The upcoming Fatal Fury/Garou Densetsu volume traces the lineage of SNK’s fighting series that began with Fatal Fury in 1991 on SNK’s Neo Geo hardware and continued through later entries including Garou: Mark of the Wolves (1999). Bitmap’s Metal Slug and The King of Fighters: The Ultimate History books established the publisher’s working relationship with SNK and set expectations for archival production values.
Dyer said he launched Bitmap Books as a hobby project in 2014 and that the unexpectedly strong response to the publisher’s first Commodore 64 book turned the effort into a full-time business. He told Nintendo Insider that he remains proud of the company’s global customer base and deliberately manages growth to protect quality.
Reflecting on Bitmap’s most difficult projects, Dyer explained that 50 Indie Games That Changed The World was especially demanding because he insisted on including development concept art for every entry. That requirement meant contacting dozens of developers and securing development assets, a time-consuming process of outreach and coordination. He also described N64: a visual compendium as a design challenge due to its use of 3D imagery and the extra print testing required to reproduce the console’s aesthetic accurately.
On legal and production matters, Dyer said Bitmap Books has not encountered legal problems related to scans or game inclusions and that maintaining print standards has been straightforward thanks to careful budgeting and long-standing relationships with printers. The publisher recommends buying directly from its website to ensure packaging quality and offers a free digital copy with direct purchases. For reprints, Bitmap occasionally corrects typos and may add content; prior buyers are provided updated material in PDF form when new content is added.
Looking beyond the Fatal Fury volume, Dyer outlined additional 2026 plans: a summer release focused on arcade history that interviews key developers from the 1970s through the 1990s, and a later book covering the Quest for Glory adventure/RPG series. For readers and collectors seeking specialist game history books with museum-quality production, Bitmap Books continues to position itself as a focused publisher balancing archival research with premium physical editions.
