Atari Acquires Digital Eclipse: What the Studio Buy Means for Retro Remasters

Atari has announced an agreement to acquire Digital Eclipse, the California studio renowned for curating and remastering classic games.

The deal, disclosed in a press release on October 31, 2023, brings a developer with a long history of preservation projects into Atari’s expanding stable of legacy-focused teams.

Digital Eclipse, founded in 1992, has overseen more than 250 releases and earned a reputation for carefully preserving retro titles.

Its credits include well-regarded collections such as Street Fighter: 30th Anniversary, SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection and Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration.

Many of these compilations have been released on platforms including the Nintendo Switch and distributed via the eShop.

Deal terms and timeline

Atari will pay an initial consideration of US$6.5 million at closing: US$4.0 million in cash and US$2.5 million in newly issued Atari ordinary shares.

In addition, there is an earn-out component of up to US$13.5 million payable in cash over the next ten years, contingent on Digital Eclipse’s future performance.

The companies said the transaction is expected to close in the next few days.

Strategic rationale

Atari said the acquisition will expand its internal development capabilities and allow the company to leverage Digital Eclipse’s proprietary technology and industry experience.

In its statement, Digital Eclipse reassured partners and fans that it will continue operating with the same editorial independence and will retain the ability to pursue projects with other publishers.

Leadership perspective

Atari chairman and CEO Wade Rosen described Digital Eclipse as an industry leader in retro preservation and expressed enthusiasm for aligning the studio’s work with Atari’s broader strategy.

Digital Eclipse president and creative director Mike Mika said the team’s collaboration with Atari on Atari 50 demonstrated mutual trust and creative alignment, and he expects the relationship to enable new projects that celebrate classic franchises.

Context in Atari’s acquisition push

The purchase of Digital Eclipse follows Atari’s May 2023 acquisition of Nightdive Studios and additional 2023 purchases including MobyGames and Atari Age.

Atari has also shown renewed interest in its back catalogue by releasing new physical cartridges for the Atari 2600 and working with hardware partner Plaion on a new console variant.

What this means for players

For players and preservation advocates, the move consolidates two high-profile preservation specialists under Atari’s umbrella.

Titles previously restored by Digital Eclipse will continue to be available on platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and via the eShop, while the studio’s preservation expertise will now be integrated into Atari’s broader IP and development roadmap.
