Aspyr Confirms No Generative AI Used in Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Challenge Mode Update

Aspyr, the studio behind the recently released Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered collection, has directly addressed community concerns regarding the use of generative AI in their latest Challenge Mode update.

The update, which launched last week across all supported platforms—including the Nintendo Switch—introduced a series of unlockable outfits and a new set of challenging objectives for players to tackle.

While the remastered trilogy has brought classic Tomb Raider adventures to a modern audience via the Nintendo eShop and other digital storefronts, the new content's reception has been mixed, particularly regarding the quality of the newly added outfits. Shortly after the update, members of the Tomb Raider fanbase began voicing dissatisfaction with the visual fidelity of the unlockable outfits.

A segment of the community went further to speculate on social media that these assets may have been generated using AI, an increasingly debated topic in both the game development industry and the broader art world. In response to the ongoing discussion, Aspyr released an official statement to clarify their development process.

The company emphasized that their internal team of artists was solely responsible for creating all new assets in the Challenge Mode update.

Aspyr stated, "We appreciate the feedback regarding the recent Challenge Mode update for Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered.

Our top priority is delivering patches to address texture issues and technical bugs identified after the update.

We also want to correct some misinformation: The outfits featured in the update were crafted entirely by our in-house artists; no generative AI assets were used.

Further details on upcoming patches and their rollout will be provided soon." Aspyr also used the opportunity to encourage players to report any technical issues via their support site, reiterating their commitment to improving the experience across platforms, including the Nintendo Switch.

Since its February 2024 release, Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered has expanded Lara Croft’s legacy, updating graphics, controls, and bonus content for digital audiences.

The arrival of new features such as Challenge Mode and ongoing developer support have reinforced the remaster’s success and prolonged its relevance in the current-generation gaming ecosystem. This commitment to transparency and quality control is notable, as developers across the industry navigate the evolving role of AI in asset creation.

Aspyr’s categorical denial of AI-generated content in Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is aligned with calls for authenticity and artistry in modern game development, especially for classic franchises with a dedicated following. Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered is available now on Nintendo Switch, as well as other major platforms.

For ongoing updates and patch notes, fans can visit the official Aspyr support channels and expect additional announcements as the developer continues to refine the trilogy.
