Nintendo Switch 2: Developers Reveal Vision and Advanced Processing Power in New Interview
As Nintendo prepares for the highly anticipated launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, industry attention is turning to the innovative design philosophy behind this next-generation system.
In the latest volume of Nintendo’s 'Ask the Developer' series, key executives Kouichi Kawamoto (Producer, Entertainment Planning & Development), Takuhiro Dohta (Director, Entertainment Planning & Development), and Tetsuya Sasaki (Technical Director, Technology Development Division) provided rare insight into the years-long development process and the technical advancements that set Switch 2 apart.
The original Nintendo Switch, released in 2017, revolutionized hybrid gaming by bridging the gap between handheld and home consoles.
Building on this legacy, the Switch 2 aims to harness enhanced hardware power to support the ambitions of both Nintendo’s internal teams and third-party developers.
Speaking candidly, Kawamoto explained that planning for the new hardware project began around 2019, though foundational research and technology exploration kicked off even earlier.
"Rather than attempting to create the entire console from the beginning, we focus first on the most technically demanding parts to ensure a robust software development environment is ready for our partners," Kawamoto said.
Sasaki elaborated that even before formally starting the project, his team was constantly gathering information on emerging technologies, enabling Nintendo to lay the groundwork for innovation.
The developers agreed that accelerating the console’s processing power was a top priority, directly responding to both the successes and limitations experienced with the original Switch.
Notably, Dohta, who previously served as Technical Director on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, shared: "Advancements in processing power open up new possibilities for gameplay, allowing developers to realize ideas that were not feasible on previous hardware."
This upgraded capability is already enabling groundbreaking titles for Nintendo Switch 2.
For example, Donkey Kong Bananza, scheduled for a July 2025 release, will feature an expansive, destructible underground environment made possible by the new hardware.
Similarly, Mario Kart World, launching in June 2025, will allow players to drive seamlessly between interconnected courses, a first for the series.
Kawamoto confirmed that these new gameplay experiences are only possible due to Switch 2’s improved processor and streamlined development environment.
When asked about the potential for unconventional hardware features—a hallmark of past Nintendo consoles—Kawamoto and Dohta reflected on the company’s evolving strategy.
While previous systems like Wii and Nintendo DS focused on unique control schemes, the Switch generation prioritized versatility and accessibility, allowing both TV and handheld play without demanding bespoke software implementations.
Dohta noted, “Just because new hardware features are introduced doesn’t guarantee they will result in innovative gameplay.
With Switch 2, the aim is to provide a strong foundation so developers can focus on creativity, supported by powerful hardware.”
The team also highlighted Nintendo’s approach to expandability, referencing the success of accessories like the Ring-Con for Ring Fit Adventure.
Kawamoto expressed that future unique experiences could be offered optionally through bundled accessories rather than being built into the base system, giving developers more freedom while maintaining broad compatibility across genres.
With the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo seeks to keep evolving the beloved hybrid platform while empowering developers to push boundaries.
As Dohta summarized, "We're leveraging everything that made Switch successful, while giving players and creators the tools and power to explore entirely new kinds of interactive entertainment." The upcoming releases of Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World offer exciting glimpses into the future of gaming on Nintendo’s next flagship console.
Nintendo Switch 2 will launch globally on June 5, 2025, with a robust software lineup and high hopes to set new standards in versatility, capability, and player experience.
