The remaster is coming to Steam and is described by SNK as an updated, modernised version of the classic that preserves the original’s distinct style while adding contemporary online and gameplay features.
Art of Fighting 3 was developed by SNK and debuted in arcades via the Neo Geo MVS in 1996.
The series is notable for its anime-influenced visuals, cinematic presentation and the recurring protagonists Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia.
SNK’s remastering effort, labelled with the suffix “R,” aims to both retain the franchise’s identity and expand its appeal to modern fighting-game audiences.
According to SNK’s announcement, Art Of Fighting 3 R will include a suite of modern competitive and accessibility features: online multiplayer with rollback netcode, comprehensive balance adjustments for all characters, an expanded Training Mode, and a new VS. mode for faster, match-based play.
The remaster also adds two familiar faces to the roster — King, who first appeared in the 1992 original Art of Fighting, and Yuri Sakazaki, who became a playable character in Art of Fighting 2 (1994).
SNK explained that the project’s “R” represents multiple concepts — including “Reignite,” “Retuned,” and “Revival” — and also nods to the series’ central heroes Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia.
In journalistic terms, SNK says the remaster preserves the original game’s unique qualities while introducing modern features such as online play and new characters, making the release “far more than a conventional remaster” and positioning it as a significantly expanded version of Art of Fighting 3.
The reveal follows SNK’s recent activity around its Neo Geo catalog, including the announcement earlier in the month that Ninja Master's ~The Scroll of the Ninja Emperor~ will join the Neo Geo Premium Selection lineup.
SNK has a track record of bringing Neo Geo classics to contemporary platforms, including releases on Nintendo Switch via the eShop, although SNK has confirmed Art Of Fighting 3 R only for Steam at this time.
No release date for Art Of Fighting 3 R has been announced.
SNK’s statement and the feature list were published as part of the company’s official communications; further details, platform confirmations and a launch window are expected in future updates from SNK.
