Return to Blacktooth, the long-awaited sequel to the 1987 classic Head Over Heels, is officially headed to the Atari Jaguar on August 27, 2026.
Developed and completed by veteran designer Colin Porch in partnership with retro publisher Thalamus Digital, the release follows the game's May 4, 2026 launch on Commodore Amiga and Atari ST.
Background and development
Colin Porch first conceived a sequel to Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond's Head Over Heels while working at Ocean Software in 1989, but the project was shelved as home consoles rose in the early 1990s.
Earlier this year, at age 81, Porch returned to finish the project with support from former Ocean colleague Gary Bracey and approval from Atari, the current rights holder.
Thalamus Digital later joined to publish the game, and Lawrence Staveley of Reboot Games is collaborating on the Atari Jaguar edition.
Release details and distribution
The Jaguar edition is scheduled for release on August 27, 2026, with pricing set at $12.99, matching the Amiga and Atari ST versions.
According to the game's itch.io page, the Jaguar build will be distributed as a .ROM file designed to run with the Atari Jaguar emulator BigP or on original hardware using compatible flash cartridges such as the GameDrive or SkunkBoard.
The release is confirmed to support both PAL and NTSC systems and is compatible with K- and M-type Jaguar consoles.
Critical reception and version notes
The original Amiga release received an 8 out of 10 from Time Extension contributor Ashley Day.
Day said fans of the 8-bit original would be astonished by how good the new visuals look and described the project as a final, nostalgic flourish from a previous era of gaming.
An Amiga CD32 version was reported to be in development after the initial launch.
Game overview
Return to Blacktooth is an isometric arcade-adventure and a spiritual successor to the 1980s classic Head Over Heels.
Players guide two protagonists across more than 300 rooms, solving puzzles, avoiding traps, and exploring five distinct planets while using complementary character abilities to collect crowns and other hidden items.
Unlike many contemporary retro-styled indie releases that target platforms such as the Nintendo Switch eShop, Return to Blacktooth focuses on authentic releases for legacy hardware and emulation.
The Atari Jaguar edition provides another option for collectors and retro enthusiasts who want to play the completed sequel on original or emulated Jaguar hardware.
