Sonic Megamix Mania, the highly anticipated fan-made modification for Sonic Mania Plus, has secured an official release date: February 6, 2026.
Developed by Team Megamix Mania, the project marks a significant milestone in the Sonic the Hedgehog modding community, revitalizing classic ROM hack content and expanding the Sonic experience on PC. Originating as a successor to the renowned Sonic Megamix—a legendary ROM hack for the original Sonic the Hedgehog—the Sonic Megamix Mania mod brings together iconic gameplay and new creative features harnessing the power of the Sonic Mania Plus engine.
The original Sonic Megamix, first developed between 2005 and 2007 and later ported to Sega Mega CD, became a touchstone for Sonic fans by introducing fresh levels, characters, and mechanics.
Notably, one of its developers, Stealth, went on to contribute to official Sonic projects, including Retro Engine remakes and Sonic Mania itself. The team behind Sonic Megamix Mania, which includes key members such as Bánhegyi "Balibali" Balázs (project organizer and lead level designer), Anthony "Troopsushi" Botsford (lead artist and designer), and lead programmer Codenamegamma, has coordinated contributions from artists, musicians, designers, quality assurance testers, and translators to ensure a polished community-driven product. Sonic Megamix Mania offers a comprehensive package, featuring a faithful recreation of the Sonic Megamix "V.4.0b" content rebuilt within the updated Mania engine.
In addition to this Classic Mode, the mod introduces a brand-new Megamix Mode, blending classic concepts from the ROM hack with Team Megamix Mania’s creative vision.
The result is a distinct gameplay experience enhanced by redesigned levels, original art, unique music, and new mechanics. According to the project's official outline, the narrative picks up five months after Sonic the Hedgehog’s last confrontation with Dr.
Eggman.
Peace is disrupted when the Chaotix uncover suspicious blueprints tied to Eggman’s inventions on Chiral Peninsula, reigniting the battle for control of the Chaos Rings and Master Emerald.
Players can expect to see beloved characters such as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty the Armadillo, Shadow the Hedgehog, Ray the Flying Squirrel, and Amy Rose in action as they navigate the new adventure across diverse acts and dimensions. Sonic Megamix Mania is available as a free download for PC; however, players will need an existing copy of Sonic Mania Plus on Steam to play, and if interested in accessing Amy Rose as a playable character, the Amy Mania mod is also required.
The latest version of the mod delivers a wealth of content, including: - 12 Classic Mode Acts plus a climactic Final Fight - 8 innovative Megamix Mode Acts - 6 playable characters: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Mighty, Shadow, and Amy Sonic Megamix Mania is a testament to the passion and dedication of the Sonic modding community, setting a new bar for fan creations built on top of official Sega platforms.
As February 6, 2026 approaches, Sonic fans can look forward to revisiting classic zones and exploring new dimensions in what promises to be one of the most feature-rich Sonic Mania Plus mods released to date.
