RPCS3 Fix Removes 'Freeze Fix' Requirement for Metal Gear Solid 4

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriot, the 2008 Kojima Productions entry published by Konami for PlayStation 3, has long been a challenging title to emulate accurately.

Fans attempting to run MGS4 on RPCS3, the leading open-source PS3 emulator, have regularly needed workaround patches to avoid recurring freezes and performance bottlenecks.

This week RPCS3 shipped a targeted fix that eliminates one of the most persistent issues.

RPCS3's development team announced that contributor elad335 identified the root cause of the cellSpurs-related freezes affecting Metal Gear Solid 4 and submitted a pull request (PR 16907) that addresses the problem.

The change was merged into the emulator and released in Build v0.0.35-17709.

According to the project's update, this fix removes the requirement for users to apply the Canary "cellSpurs urgent commands" or the so-called "freeze fix" patch to avoid those specific freezes.

In practical terms, the RPCS3 team says players should see improved stability and performance in MGS4 without the Canary workaround.

The developers also indicated the remediation may benefit other titles that suffer from SPU-related bottlenecks, since the fix targets the underlying cellSpurs behavior rather than a game-specific patch.

RPCS3 still cautions users that Metal Gear Solid 4 remains classified as "in-game" on the compatibility tracker.

That designation means the game is moderately playable but still exhibits significant glitches and areas of insufficient performance.

The emulator's documentation lists additional crash and compatibility fixes that players should apply or reference for the best experience.

The fix is included in the latest RPCS3 build and can be downloaded from the emulator's official website.

Emulation users who previously relied on the Canary "freeze fix" are advised to update to Build v0.0.35-17709 and consult RPCS3's compatibility notes for any remaining workarounds or required settings.

For preservation-minded players and emulator developers, PR 16907 represents a meaningful step toward smoother PS3 emulation of one of the platform's most technically demanding titles.

The RPCS3 project continues to publish build notes and compatibility documentation as further improvements are merged.
