The original Ocarina of Time, first released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998, is widely regarded as a landmark title in action-adventure design; this modern remake aims to preserve the core experience while updating visuals and quality-of-life systems for current hardware.
At a recent presentation, Nintendo showed substantial new gameplay footage and detailed several of the remake’s changes.
The company confirmed the launch date of 5 November 2026 and provided a first look at how the classic title has been adapted for a modern platform.
Viewers who want to avoid spoilers should be aware that the reveal included significant story and gameplay sequences.
Key gameplay changes and preservation choices
- Jumping input: Link can now jump using a dedicated button, a control update that modernises traversal without altering original level design.
- Transition handling: Many transitions into shops and interior areas are now seamless, but Nintendo has kept transition screens when entering major outdoor areas such as the Deku Tree dungeon and Hyrule Field.
Developers said those preserved transitions are intended to maintain the rhythm and pacing of the original title.
- Fidelity and modernisation: The remake is largely a 1:1 reinterpretation of the original game, with revamped environments, updated assets, and additional quality-of-life improvements designed for Switch 2 hardware.
Ocarina integration and Zelda Notes
Nintendo also demonstrated changes to how the Ocarina functions in the remake.
Players will be able to hum tunes in real life to interact with the game, and Nintendo plans to offer a dedicated physical Ocarina accessory to support this feature.
In parallel, a new Zelda Notes smartphone app will be implemented; Nintendo outlined that Zelda Notes will allow players to play the Ocarina from their phone, review in-game accomplishments, take a knowledge quiz, and access other companion features.

Nintendo’s reveal closed with a promise of further details to come ahead of the November 2026 launch.
The remake will release on Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo has indicated more information about editions, pricing, and digital availability on the eShop will be disclosed in subsequent announcements.
