Description

The Legend of Zelda series, developed by Nintendo, has earned a reputation for intricate world-building and a famously tangled timeline, igniting passionate discussions with every new release.

The newest installment, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, continues this tradition, enriching the franchise’s lore and, for the first time, officially confirming its placement on the Downfall timeline.

Available exclusively for Nintendo Switch via retail and the Nintendo eShop, Echoes of Wisdom was unveiled with much fanfare during a recent Nintendo Direct and has already become a focal point for lore enthusiasts. Since its debut in 1986, the Zelda series has spawned numerous theories around where each title fits within its three-branch timeline.

Previously, Nintendo released an official chronology that ambiguously placed breath-taking entries like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom apart from established branches.

With the release of Echoes of Wisdom, Nintendo has clarified that the game unfolds within the Downfall timeline—a branch hypothesized to follow Link's defeat by Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time, subsequently leading to key events in A Link to the Past. One unique aspect of Echoes of Wisdom is its divergence from past storylines.

Notably, the game omits series antagonist Ganondorf in favor of a new primary foe: Null.

Through in-game dialogue and lore discoveries, players learn that Null predates not only Ganondorf but even creation itself.

Described as an ancient entity formed in the void, Null's insatiable urge to consume paved the way for the three Golden Goddesses—Farore, Din, and Nayru—to craft the realm of Hyrule, sealing Null away.

Yet, Null’s lingering power causes rifts to appear, spawning monsters and iconic bosses familiar to dedicated fans. Echoes of Wisdom also introduces the Tris, beings formed by the goddesses to counteract Null’s influence.

Players partner with Tri, Zelda’s companion in this adventure, who serves as just one among thousands of Tris dedicated to patching these rifts.

The Tris’ powers, which allow Zelda to create 'Echoes', cleverly parallel Null’s own abilities.

Throughout the story, Zelda must rescue fellow Tris to repair the damage and restore peace to Hyrule.

In a pivotal twist, Null manipulates events so that Zelda unlocks the location of the Prime Energy—known in classic lore as the Triforce.

Null is ultimately foiled by Zelda and Link, who retrieve the Triforce of Power and bring the saga to a close. This new narrative direction not only cements Echoes of Wisdom within the series canon, but also retroactively casts entities like Null and the Tris as integral, if unseen, elements in the broader Zelda mythology.

In an official development commentary, Nintendo emphasized that tying Echoes of Wisdom directly to the Downfall timeline allows for deeper connections to classic games like A Link to the Past, while granting the storytelling team the freedom to explore untold epochs of Hyrule’s history. Critically, Echoes of Wisdom has been praised for addressing gaps many fans noticed in previous Switch entries, namely the limited references to the Triforce and Hyrule’s goddesses in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

While the game’s art style draws from Link’s Awakening on the Switch, its narrative takes familiar elements and recontextualizes them in profound ways, offering a more mature and intricate story than its friendly visuals suggest. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is available now on Nintendo Switch, bringing a significant addition to Zelda’s rich lore, and providing long-awaited answers to questions spanning the series’ 35-year history.
