Nintendo Advances The Legend of Zelda Live-Action Movie, Announces 2027 Premiere Date and Main Cast Nintendo’s highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda live-action film, produced in partnership with Sony Pictures, has moved into its next phase with the announcement of its main cast members.

The film adaptation of the legendary video game series is slated for a theatrical release on May 7, 2027, aiming to bring the beloved fantasy world of Hyrule to life like never before. After years of anticipation following its initial reveal, Nintendo has confirmed that Bo Bragason will play Princess Zelda, while Benjamin Evan Ainsworth has secured the role of Link.

Bragason, a rising talent, is set to appear in the forthcoming BBC drama King and Conqueror.

Meanwhile, Ainsworth earned industry recognition through his lead role in Disney’s 2022 live-action adaptation of Pinocchio, and recently starred alongside Bryan Cranston in Everything’s Going to Be Great. In a statement, Shigeru Miyamoto—creator of The Legend of Zelda and a longtime driving force at Nintendo—explained the casting decision: “We believe that introducing fresh faces to these iconic characters allows their legacy to stand at the forefront of the story, helping both fans and newcomers fully immerse in the world of Zelda.” This approach marks a shift from Nintendo’s previous casting choices for video game film adaptations, such as the star-studded Super Mario Bros.

Instead, the company is focusing on engaging relatively lesser-known English actors for its Legend of Zelda film, underscoring a commitment to authenticity and character-driven storytelling. The live-action movie adapts The Legend of Zelda, one of Nintendo’s most successful and influential franchises, famed for its adventures across titles like Ocarina of Time, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

Since its inception in 1986, the series has sold over 150 million units worldwide and remains a cornerstone property of the Nintendo Switch, eShop, and other Nintendo hardware platforms. Although additional casting details—such as who will portray the iconic villain Ganondorf—have yet to be revealed, the selection of Bragason and Ainsworth has generated fresh excitement among fans.

With production ramping up ahead of its 2027 release and the creative guidance of Nintendo and Sony Pictures, expectations are high that the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie will do justice to its legendary source material.
