Wil Overton Super Play T-Shirt: Former Rare Artist Reimagines Super Nintendo Magazine Cover

Wil Overton, the artist best known for creating bespoke front covers for every issue of the UK Super Play magazine, has launched a new range of Super Nintendo-themed t-shirts on Etsy.

Overton, who later joined the Super Play writing team, moved on to work at N64 Magazine before taking a role at UK studio Rare.

He has now left Rare and is selling fan-oriented apparel that celebrates 1990s console culture.

Super Play ran for 48 issues and built a reputation among UK SNES fans for its distinctive cover art and editorial focus on the Super Nintendo and Super Famicom libraries.

Overton produced a unique cover image for each of those 48 issues, a body of work that helped define the magazine’s visual identity.

His new clothing line references that legacy, with five shirt designs currently listed on his Etsy store, the most striking being a Metroid 'Super Play' edition.

On his Facebook page, Overton explained that he is experimenting with Etsy as a retail platform for t-shirts, prints, and other items, and invited supporters to suggest specific designs they would like to see.

The Etsy listing for the Metroid shirt notes that the piece incorporates the magazine’s strapline written in Japanese so that it reads 'Independent Super Famicom Magazine.' The product description leans into nostalgia, prompting memories of 1990s magazine culture with rhetorical questions about subscriptions and the quirks of the era’s hardware and games.

These releases arrive amid growing interest in retro gaming merchandise and the continued cultural cachet of classic Nintendo platforms such as the SNES and its Japanese counterpart, the Super Famicom.

Overton’s transition from magazine art to commercial design reflects a broader trend of veteran games-industry artists monetizing archival and reinterpretive work through direct-to-consumer channels like Etsy.

For collectors and fans of retro Nintendo journalism, Overton’s shirts offer a tangible connection to the era of print gaming culture.

With five designs available now, his Etsy storefront provides an accessible way for UK and international Super Nintendo fans to own artwork tied directly to Super Play’s legacy.

Those interested can view the listings and purchase directly through Overton’s Etsy shop.
