Edia has quietly released Cosmic Fantasy Collection 2 on the Nintendo Switch eShop in the West, surprising fans and industry watchers alike.
Launching almost without advance notice or promotion, the collection became available digitally for Western audiences on February 13, 2025.
This approach echoes Edia’s earlier release strategy for the first Cosmic Fantasy Collection, which appeared on the eShop in January 2024 with minimal pre-release announcements.
Cosmic Fantasy Collection 2 brings together the next three chapters of the storied RPG series originally developed for the PC Engine CD.
The titles included are Cosmic Fantasy 3: The Chronicle of Rei, as well as Cosmic Fantasy 4: Prelude to Legend and Cosmic Fantasy 4: Van’s Return.
All three games are presented with newly localized English text, making them accessible to a broader audience outside Japan for the first time.
The digital collection is priced at £42 in the UK and $52 in the US.
Notably, North American players have the flexibility to purchase each game individually from the eShop, offering greater accessibility to fans who may be interested in specific entries.
This option is not currently available to UK customers, who must buy the full collection as a set.
For collectors and physical edition enthusiasts, this launch comes as a welcome opportunity—especially for those who missed pre-orders for the Limited Run Games physical release, which is currently scheduled to ship in May.
With strong demand for niche Japanese RPGs and retro game re-releases on the Nintendo Switch, Cosmic Fantasy Collection 2 stands out as a significant addition to the console’s increasingly diverse library.
According to the official Nintendo eShop product description, Cosmic Fantasy Collection 2 serves as the grand finale to the popular series, revisiting the world and characters that have captured the imaginations of RPG fans.
The collection boasts enhanced graphics and updated visuals, with lavishly illustrated cutscenes and full voice acting embedded in key narrative sequences.
Returning heroes and heroines from the franchise unite across these chapters, offering a compelling narrative for both newcomers and longtime fans.
Edia’s understated approach to marketing hasn’t dampened enthusiasm among fans of classic RPGs and PC Engine CD game preservation.
With the continued expansion of Japanese RPG libraries on the Nintendo Switch eShop, Cosmic Fantasy Collection 2 demonstrates the platform’s role as a key destination for retro gaming experiences and previously inaccessible regional titles.
