Description

Nintendo has rolled out the latest update for Tetris 99 on Nintendo Switch, bringing players version 2.5.0 and introducing an exciting enhancement: the ability to redeem prior event themes with in-game tickets.

This new feature, announced by The Tetris Company, aims to make exclusive content from Tetris 99’s celebrated Maximus Cup events more accessible than ever. Tetris 99 has enjoyed tremendous popularity since its launch in February 2019 as a free-to-play title for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

Developed through a partnership between Nintendo and The Tetris Company, the game puts a fresh battle royale spin on the beloved puzzle franchise, allowing 99 players to compete in real time until only one remains.

Regular themed Maximus Cups and crossover events have long been a key attraction, allowing players to earn unique cosmetic themes inspired by iconic Nintendo franchises. With the new 2.5.0 update, players can now acquire select previous event (Special) themes directly via the Customize menu in exchange for 30 in-game tickets each.

Notably, the update lists popular themes from games such as Super Mario All-Stars, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, Miitopia, Mario Golf: Super Rush, Monster Hunter Rise, Metroid Dread, and WarioWare: Move It.

This addition answers long-standing community requests to access missed Maximus Cup content, further enhancing replay value on the Nintendo Switch eShop exclusive. However, the initial English patch notes posted on the American Nintendo Support site led to confusion, suggesting users could exchange previously downloaded themes for tickets.

Well-known dataminer and Nintendo news source OatmealDome clarified on BlueSky that the translation misrepresented the update.

The actual feature enables players to buy past event themes for tickets, not to sell them back for in-game currency.

"The updated functionality allows fans to purchase select previously released event themes using game tickets,” noted OatmealDome.

This accurate translation ensures that the new system is a straightforward, player-friendly way to collect event themes. Beyond this sought-after improvement, version 2.5.0 brings a range of general adjustments designed to improve gameplay comfort and overall user experience.

While the English patch notes are expected to be clarified soon, players can immediately enjoy the expanded theme collection options in Tetris 99’s latest version. Since launch, Tetris 99 has remained a flagship title in the Nintendo Switch Online library, earning praise for its innovative design and robust post-release support.
