Super Mario Elements, a modding team known for multiple Sunshine-related projects, has announced Super Mario Sunset, a full visual and audio overhaul for the 2002 GameCube platformer Super Mario Sunshine.
The team says the mod will debut in full on July 19, 2026, following earlier preview builds that circulated among modding communities.
According to the mod’s final trailer, Super Mario Sunset repaints Isle Delfino with a consistent “soft-lighted” sunset aesthetic across every level, and expands beyond visual changes to include new music, fresh sound effects, updated enemy textures, selectable visual filters, and redesigned secrets.
The developers also highlight a dedicated homage to the SNES title Yoshi’s Island among the refreshed hidden content.
Technical work and lead
The project is led by a developer using the handle Sean.O and uses JoshuaMK’s Better Sunshine Engine to enable enhancements to camera behavior, frame-rate and aspect-ratio options, and physics tweaks.
The team presents these technical changes as part of the mod’s effort to modernize the original game’s presentation and playfeel while preserving its level design.
Earlier preview and fixes
A preview build of Super Mario Sunset previously appeared on GameBanana and included early versions of Sirena Beach and Noki Bay.
That build exhibited unfinished elements and collision issues with skyboxes and trees; the trailer and project notes indicate those problems have been addressed for the official release.
Trailer messaging rewritten
In its promotional material, the mod team frames Super Mario Sunset as more than a simple recolor—describing it as a comprehensive aesthetic and technical rework that expands how a visual reskin can alter tone, audio, and discovery across Sunshine’s islands.
Availability and next steps
The mod’s July 19, 2026 release date is confirmed in the team’s final trailer.
The developers have released trailers and previews through their community channels; interested players should follow Super Mario Elements’ official pages and established mod distribution sites for the release and installation instructions.
As with all fan mods, users should consult legal and platform-specific guidance before applying mods to retail game files or hardware.
