Veteran WarioWare Developer Goro Abe Departs Nintendo, Becomes Professor at Osaka Electro-Communication University

Nintendo has seen the departure of another acclaimed developer as Goro Abe, a seminal figure behind the WarioWare franchise, has officially left the company.

Abe, whose career at Nintendo spans more than two decades, directed or co-directed every core entry in the WarioWare series since its inception on the Game Boy Advance.

His creative influence has shaped the identity of WarioWare and contributed to its ongoing success across multiple Nintendo hardware generations, including the Nintendo Switch. Abe announced his retirement from Nintendo at the end of February and took to social media platform X to confirm his next chapter.

Beginning in April, Abe will serve as a professor at Osaka Electro-Communication University within the Department of Digital Games, focusing on the new 'Game and Social Design' program.

Reflecting on his transition, Abe stated: “Starting in April, I will be working as a professor at Osaka Electro-Communication University, in the newly established Game and Social Design major.

I look forward to conducting game-related research and production, hoping to interact with a broader community than before.” Goro Abe’s departure follows closely behind the retirements of other longstanding Nintendo figures, Hideki Konno and Kensuke Tanabe.

Together, these industry veterans have left an indelible impact on some of Nintendo’s most innovative and celebrated titles, underscoring a generational transition within the company’s celebrated development teams. The latest entry in the series, WarioWare: Move It!, launched on the Nintendo Switch in November 2023.

This title was met with favorable critical reception, earning an 8 out of 10 from outlets such as Nintendo Life, which praised its return to motion-controlled gameplay and its broad, family-friendly appeal.

The WarioWare series, renowned for its fast-paced microgames and quirky sense of humor, continues to be a hallmark of Nintendo’s commitment to originality in game design.

Abe’s dedication to the franchise has helped WarioWare become one of Nintendo’s most distinctive and enduring series.

With his transition into academia, Abe brings his experience and creative vision to the next generation of game developers.

Osaka Electro-Communication University’s new digital games program is poised to benefit from Abe’s practical insights and industry knowledge, ensuring his legacy will extend well beyond his work at Nintendo.

While Nintendo continues to innovate with new hardware and first-party titles for the Switch and beyond, Abe’s influence on game development and mentorship highlights the ongoing evolution of Japan’s game industry.

His departure marks the end of a chapter for the WarioWare franchise but opens a promising avenue for future talent in digital games research and education.
