Introduction

Veins of Iron is a newly revealed Wolfenstein 3D-style first-person shooter being developed for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System by homebrew studio ModeVII.

First publicly showcased in early May 2026 with a gameplay video, the project is positioned as a 90s-inspired horror shooter built to run on real SNES hardware and powered by a custom cartridge co-processor.

Lead developer Jan Olausson has positioned the title as ModeVII's first commercial project and plans to fund physical production and additional content via Kickstarter.

Kickstarter launch and funding

Update on October 20, 2026: The Veins of Iron Kickstarter is now live.

ModeVII set a funding goal of EUR 9,900 and had raised EUR 7,502 from 60 backers at the time of the update.

Physical boxed collector editions are listed at EUR 99 for NTSC and PAL variants.

Custom cartridge and hardware details

ModeVII has confirmed the project will use a custom cartridge containing a Raspberry Pi RP2350B co-processor.

The module is reported to house a dual-core ARM Cortex-M33 CPU clocked at 150 MHz, with 8 MB of flash and 1 MB of SRAM, and is designed to operate on authentic SNES consoles.

Artwork, in-game assets, and developer response

Olausson has acknowledged that the current box art on the Kickstarter is a temporary AI-generated placeholder that will be replaced once funding is secured.

He has stated that Kickstarter proceeds are intended to expand art and music, fund physical cartridge production, and support further polishing.

Olausson also clarified that the in-game pixel art was created by hand in Aseprite and that no AI was used for those assets or for the 65816 assembly code underpinning the project.

In response to community criticism of the placeholder key art, the developer said the team understands the concerns and is working with an artist to replace the box art with new hand-drawn artwork.

Technical progress and next steps

Olausson has described active technical progress including textured floors and ceilings, a scripted event system for gameplay interactions, lighting and screen shake effects, and other engine improvements.

Early footage released by ModeVII was recorded on a custom emulator, and the developer indicated a first assembled prototype cartridge should be available soon to demonstrate the game running on actual SNES hardware.

Project description

Veins of Iron is framed as a horror narrative set in an industrialized, plague-stricken Europe, following protagonist Viktor Eisenhart as he confronts cults, undead threats, and forbidden machinery across alleys, factories, manors, and catacombs.

Conclusion

With its Kickstarter active and technical milestones outlined, Veins of Iron positions itself as a notable homebrew attempt to bring modern FPS sensibilities to classic SNES hardware.

Backers interested in physical cartridges and boxed editions can find the campaign live as of October 20, 2026.
